　Last week, we learned the expression 'two times two makes four'. This is 'multiplication'. In other words, you multiply*1 two by two*2 to get four. Likewise, you multiply three by seven to get twenty-one. Or three multiplied by seven is twenty-one.

　We also learned the expression 'six over three makes two'. This is 'division'. You divide*3 six by three*4 to get two. Likewise, you divide twenty-seven by three to get nine. Or twenty-seven divided by three is nine.

掛け算のほうは比較的簡単です Two times two is four の times を数式で用いる「×」に置き換えてみればすぐに分かります

割り算のほうはどうでしょう 例えば six over three is two、これは「6を3で割ると2」という意味でした。実際に数字を並べて見ると、もっと簡単に理解できます。six over three を直訳すれば「3の上に6」です そうです 日本語では「3分の6」と言いますね overは分数の真ん中に引かれた棒線、いわゆる括線のことなのです 数学の記号に置き換えるなら「÷」です。

「図らずも〜することになる」、「結局〜するハメになる」という意味で、日常会話でもよく使われるフレーズです いくつか例文を挙げましょう。

We ended up spending the night in the airport.
「結局、空港で一泊するハメになった」

I don't want to end up doing the whole thing all over again.
「ぜーんぶ最初っからやり直し、みたいなことにはなりたくない」

I ended up buying a new one.
「新しいのを買うハメになった」

lastという単語を知らないリスナーさんはたぶんいないと思いますが 動詞の last はなかなか使いこなせないのではないでしょうか きょうは動詞の last を使ったフレーズを紹介します

Can you figure out what they're called in Japanese?

　Well, I know you're not here for numbers. Are you ready to learn a phrase now? And instead of the sentence 'My memory lasts only 80 minutes', I'll give you this: My phone battery lasts only 8 hours.

例えば。「こんどの試合、うちのティームは勝てるかな」と聞かれて、It's unlikely と答えるなら、「ちょっと勝ち目はないね」という意味になるし、「彼らの提案、うまくいくと思うか」と聞かれて、It's unlikely と答えるなら、「まずだめだろうね」という意味になります。

unlikely の後ろにthat節が来ることもあります。that節の内容はありそうもない、起こりそうもないという意味になります

It's unlikely that he will come.

It's unlikely that I can get off work early today.

It's unlikely that the company will become profitable anytime soon.

likely と同じように be unlikely to という形をとることもあります。

He is unlikely to come.

よく使われる表現なのに、なぜか日本人になじみの少ない be likely to do... をマスターしましょう 「〜しそうだ（その可能性が高い）」と言いたいとき、今日のレッスンを思い出してくださいね ちなみに「〜しがちだ（する傾向にある)」 は何と言うか覚えていますか 思い浮かばないリスナーさんは、過去のレッスンも読んでみて。

英語では洗剤や歯磨き粉、あるいはシリアルとかお菓子など、日常的に消費する食品や日用品を consumer packaged goods と言います。最近では fast-moving consumer goods なんていう言い方もします。花王とかライオンとかP&G、ユニリーバみたいな会社はCPGメーカー、FMCGメーカーです

さて、今私の手元にはアメリカで買ってきた歯磨き粉があります。外箱に印刷された効用とか宣伝文句は日本製のものとよく似ています。

まず最初のライン。「コーヒー、紅茶、ワイン、たばこ、その他の落ちにくい汚れを除去します」 歯の着色汚れを日本語でもステインと言いますが、これは英語の stain をカタカナ表記した言葉です。stain は汚れや染みのことで、服についた染みなども stain と言います

2番目。日本語では「プラークコントロール」と言いますが、英語では tartar control のほうが一般的かな。plaque は歯垢、tartar は歯石です。

3番目。cavities、虫歯のことですね 「あなたの歯を虫歯から守る」 虫歯予防を謳わない歯磨き粉はありません。米国製も同じです。他に to fight cavities という表現もよく見かけます。虫歯と闘う歯磨き粉ですね。

おしまいの1行。「さわやかミントの香りがいつまでも続きます」 こんなところも日本製とよく似ていますね
