You often hear this phrase from well-meaning² friends trying to encourage someone who has been offended³. For example, you’ve got laid-off⁴ because your company is downsizing⁵ and you’re upset⁶. Well, don’t take it personally. It’s not your fault. It’s your employer who fails to support⁷ all of the employees. Or, You’ve found out your husband cheated on you⁸. Don’t take it personally, nothing’s wrong with you. It’s your husband who’s wrong. So, if your boss is in a bad mood and he takes it out on you⁹, don’t take it personally. He’s just in a bad mood.

もし逆の立場で、自分が落ち込んでいるときに「Don’t take it personally.」と声をかけられたら、”Thank you, I try not to.“「ありがと。気にしないようにするよ。」とか、”Yes, I take it personally!!!“「気にするに決まってるよ（気休めを言わないでよ）！」などと答えるそうです
