「Shape Of My Heart」「Englishman In NewYork」といえば…そう、イギリスを代表するアーティストSTINGです。アマチュア時代、いつも黄色と黒のボーダーシャツを着ていたことから、STING（蜂の針）と呼ばれるようになったんですって 今日はそんなSTINGの曲を紹介します

　When you listen to a song in English, you don’t have to be able to pick up every single word in the lyrics¹. Instead, try to figure out² what it’s about more generally.

　For example, let’s use “I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying”. It’s Sting’s. It has a storyline, it’s articulate³, and it uses very simple words, so you don’t need much help of a dictionary. There are two words in the title which seem to have opposite⁴ meanings, Happy and Crying. Is this a happy song, or a sad one? Well, that’s what you have to figure out.

　The first few lines are easy to hear. It goes: Seven weeks have passed now since she left me. So what do you know? Well, there are a man and a woman and they’ve got broken up. The second line goes: She shows her face⁵ to ask me how I am. So, although they’ve got broken up, she’s still worried about him. They don’t hate each other. Down the middle, you’ll pick up words like lawyer, kids, joint custody⁶, legal separation⁷. These words tell you they’re married, have kids and are talking about a divorce⁸. Toward the end, he looks up at the stars and realizes he is part of a big universe. Finally, he says, “everybody’s got to leave the darkness sometime.”

　So, is this a happy song, or a sad one? Kind of difficult to answer. But, at least you can figure out you don’t want to play this music for a friend who’s having a serious problem with his wife.

　英語の歌を聴いて、歌詞中の単語をすべて拾おうなんて考えないで！ それよりも全体的なテーマをつかむようにしましょう。

　ここでは「I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying」を例にとります。スティングの歌です。筋があるし、発音もはっきりしているし、とても平易な単語を使っているので、辞書を使う必要もあまりありません。タイトルには正反対を意味するような二つの言葉が使われています。HappyとCryingです。さて、これはハッピーな歌なんでしょうか。それとも悲しい歌なんでしょうか。そこのところを考えてほしいわけです。

　出だしは簡単に聞き取れます。「彼女が去って７週間」。ここから何がわかるでしょう。男の人と女の人がいて、二人が別れたということです。次のラインでは、「彼女がやってきて、元気にしてるか訊ね」ます。つまり、別れても彼女は彼を気遣っているのですね。決して憎み合っているわけじゃない。真ん中あたりでlawyer、kids、joint custody、legal separationといった言葉が拾えると思います。これらの言葉からわかることは、彼らが結婚していて、子どもがいて、現在離婚について話し合っていること。さらに終わりの方で、彼は星空を見上げ、自分が大きな宇宙の一部なんだと気づきます。そしてこう言います。「いつまでもふさぎ込んでばかりはいられない。」

　さて、この歌はハッピーな歌でしょうか、悲しい歌でしょうか。答えに苦しむところではあります。が、少なくとも、奥さんとの間にシリアスな問題を抱えた友人には聞かせたくない曲であることはわかりますね。
