Have you been following 24, a very popular drama series on television in the U.S.? I haven’t. But since Kiefer Sutherland won the Emmy Award as Best Actor for his role as Jack Bauer, I finally watched the very first episode of the series to honor1 the actor. In fact, Sutherland had been nominated for five consecutive2 years for the same role, but this was the first victory in competition for the top honor in the U.S. television community.
24 can be a very good learning material3 for English learners. It’s a drama series and helps you continue your learning on a regular basis. The story is contemporary4, so you can find a lot of colloquial5 expressions. For example, at the very beginning of the first episode, Jack’s daughter uses this expression: Is she still giving you the cold shoulder6?
”Cold shoulder” means unfriendly treatment7. For example, since Tom forgot his girlfriend’s birthday, she’s giving him the cold shoulder. This means Tom’s girlfriend is unfriendly to him and doesn’t want to speak to him.

なぜ「cold shoulder」が「冷遇」という意味かというと、、、「shoulder」は羊の肩の肉のことで、その昔、招かざる客に残り物の冷たい肩肉をふるまったことからきているそうです
ちなみに「cold blooded」「cold heart」だと、どちらも「冷血・冷淡」といった意味になります。こちらはなんとなく想像がつきますネ。
