ダン・ブラウンの世界的ベストセラー小説 を映画化したものですが、実話っぽく謎解きされるので実話と誤解する人がいるだろうと、テロップに「これはフィクションです」と入れる事を強要されたとか…
内容が少々難しい作品なので、原作を読んでからのほうがよいかもしれませんね

Well, I’m not particularly hung up on Tom Hanks, but somehow I’ve watched his movie again…. The Da Vinci Code. The movie is about the quest for1 the Holy Grail2. What is the Holy Grail? Well, the Holy Grail, in Christian mythology3, is the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper4 which is said to have miraculous powers. There are many stories and movies in which knights and adventurers seek for this magical cup, like Indiana Jones.
The Holy Grail is very often used as a metaphor5. A metaphor of something which is sought-after6 but extremely difficult, or almost impossible, to obtain7. It can be an object, or a goal, or a formula. Let’s say, all women have been looking for the weight-loss Holy Grail. Any book that has a word “diet” in the title is likely to sell. But in reality, there’s no success-guaranteed way of losing weight, at least not today. Likewise, fund managers may be seeking after the stock trading Holy Grail, so that they can always get return on their investment8. In the world of medicine, the Holy Grail may be a cure9 for all forms of cancer. Naturally, there’s a list of holy grails in different areas of science.

特にトム・ハンクスにこだわっているつもりはないんですが、またしてもトムの映画を観てしまいました。今回は『ダヴィンチ・コード』です。テーマはホーリー・グレイル探し。ホーリー・グレイルとは何でしょう? キリスト教神話でいう聖杯、イエスが最後の晩餐で使った杯で、奇跡を起こす力を秘めていると言われています。物語や映画など、この魔法の杯をめぐる騎士や勇者の冒険譚はいくつもあります。例えばインディ・ジョーンズなんかもそうですね。
さて、この聖杯はメタファーとしてもよく用いられます。誰もが探し求める、なのになかなか見つからない、ほとんど入手不可能なものの喩えです。物である場合もあるし、達成すべき目標や必勝の方程式だったりもします。例えば、女の人なら誰だって、ダイエットの聖杯があればのどから手が出るほど欲しいでしょう。表題に「ダイエット」の文字がある本は売れる見込みが高い。ところが現実には、絶対に成功するダイエット法なんて、少なくとも今のところはありません。同様に、ファンド・マネジャーなら投資の聖杯を探しているかもしれない。そんなものがあれば絶対に儲かります。あるいは医療の世界では、どんなガンも治してしまうような治療法は未だ聖杯です。当然、科学のさまざまな分野にはリストアップできるくらいの聖杯が存在しています。
