去年は邦画が盛り返し、興行収入が洋画よりも上回った、というニュース を最近耳にしました。確かに、ハリウッド映画で、すごく観たい という映画は最近ないかも…
さておき、今日も、邦画からのレッスンです

英文スクリプト
　Most of the DVDs of Miyazaki animation films come with¹ English subtitles. Although it doesn’t work as a listening comprehension² exercise, which is a drawback³, it’s interesting to know how everyday Japanese is translated into English.

　Going back to Miyazaki films, my all-time favorite⁴ is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. The story takes place 1,000 years after the “Seven Days of Fire” which destroyed much of human civilization and the Earth’s ecosystem. And the young princess struggles⁵ to unveil⁶ the mystery of a toxic⁷ jungle called the “Sea of Decay⁸” to restore⁹ the peaceful world. The 1984 movie is environmentally-enlightened¹⁰.

　Well, what I have for you to learn today is this expression: Put yourself in my shoes¹¹. This is said by one of the elder guards who’ve been taking care of Nausicaa since her babyhood. He is saying, try to imagine, if you were me, how you’d feel or what you’d do. There are several variations such as “put yourself in my place” or “put yourself in my position” or “put your feet in my shoes”. Personally I like the last one.

スクリプト訳文
　宮崎アニメのDVDの大半は英語の字幕付きです。リスニングの訓練にはならないという短所はありますが、日本語の日常会話がどんな英語に訳されるのか、興味深いところではありませんか。

　宮崎アニメの話に戻りますが、私のお気に入りは断然『風の谷のナウシカ』です。時は世界を焼き尽くした七日間から1000年後。人類の文明と地球の生態系は大きく損なわれました。若き王女のナウシカは「腐海」と呼ぶ猛毒の森の神秘を解き明かし、平和な世界を回復しようとします。1984年制作の作品ですが、環境問題に対する強い意識がうかがえます。

　さて、今日のフレーズにはこれを選びました。「Put yourself in my shoes.」 ナウシカを幼い頃から見守ってきた老兵士の台詞です。「私の身になって考えてください(ワシの身にもなってくれ)」という意味です。この言い回しにはいくつかのバリエーションがあります。「put yourself in my place」、「put yourself in my position」、「put your feet in my shoes」などです。私は個人的には一番最後のものを好んで用います。

イタリア語「GHIBLI」が由来で、「サハラの砂漠に吹く熱風」という意味。本当は「ギブリ」と読むそうですが、読み方を間違ったらしいです そんなこともあるんですね
