get、make、takeなど、一見簡単そうな単語ほどいろいろな表現や意味を持っているので、使いこなすのは難しいですね 今日紹介するフレーズは、そんな単語”take”を使った表現です。使わないに越したことはない表現だけれど、表現の幅を広げるためにも覚えておきましょう

Last month, Paul Newman, an award-winning1 movie star, announced that he’s retiring from2 acting. He’s been starred in many of Hollywood’s greatest feature films including “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, “The Sting”, “Cool Hand Luke” and “The Hustler”.
In 1974, “The Towering Inferno3” jointly presented by Fox and Warner paired Paul Newman with4 Steve McQueen. It was about the building fire and one of those disaster5 movies which flourished6 in 1970s. While Michael O’Hallorhan, a fire chief7, was played by McQueen, Doug Roberts, an architect who designed the building, was played by Newman. They joined forces8 to fight the fire9 and evacuate10 people trapped11 in a restaurant on the 135th floor.
In his first encounter12 with Roberts, O’Hallorhan says to the architect, “You know there’s no sure way for us to fight a fire in anything over the 7th floor but you guys just keep building ‘em as high as you can”. Roberts responds by saying, “Hey, are you here to take me on13 or the fire?” “To take on” means “to oppose14 or to fight” someone or something. So, Roberts is saying the fire chief should try to figure out how to deal with the building on fire, rather than blaming the architect for having built it.
Well, in addition to winning an Oscar, Newman has been operating a food company to fund15 charities. The company donates16 all profits for educational and charitable purposes. So, if you see his salad dressings in a nearby supermarket, it might be an opportunity to help people.

1974年、21世紀フォックスとワーナーブラザースが共同製作した『タワーリング・インフェルノ』では、スティーヴ・マクィーンと共演しました。1970年代はいわゆるパニック映画の最盛期ですが、ビル火災を扱ったこの作品もその一つです。消防隊長マイケル・オハラハンをマクィーンが、ビルの設計者ダグ・ロバーツをニューマンが演じました。二人は協力して消火にあたり、135階のレストランで逃げ場を失った人々を救出しようとします。
最初の出会いで、オハラハンは建築家にこう言います。「確実に消火できるのは7階までだ。なのにあんたたちはどこまでも高いビルを建てようとする」 ロバーツはこう答えます。「君は私と口論しに来たのか、それとも火消しに来たのか?」 (原語の)take onは人や組織を相手に戦う、誰かと対決するという意味です。つまり、ロバーツは「現に火が出ているビルにどう対処するか考えるべきで、建てた人間を非難している場合じゃない」と言いたい訳です。
さて、ポール・ニューマンは、俳優業の傍ら、慈善事業の資金を調達するために食品会社を経営しています。会社の収益は教育などの慈善活動に全額寄付されています。もし近所のスーパーで彼のサラダドレッシングを見かけたら、人助けをする機会かもしれませんね。

今現在でも、135階建てのビルはありません。階数では、今のところシカゴのシアーズタワー（108階）が最高らしいのですが、現在、ドバイで160階建てのビルが建築中とのこと 想像を絶する高さですね。
シアーズタワーの展望台に行ったことがあるのですが、エレベータでのぼるのに時間がすごくかかったのと、ビルから見ているというより飛行機から見ているような景色だったを覚えています。
ちなみに、超高層ビルのことを、日本語では「天に摩する（届く）ほどの楼閣（高いたてもの）」という意味で「摩天楼」、英語では「空(sky)を削るもの(scraper)」という意味で「Skyscraper」とも呼ばれていますよ
