Today, I’m going to talk about the movie “The Devil Wears Prada”. The story takes place in Manhattan and illustrates men and women working for a Vogue-like fashion magazine. As glamorous1 as it may look, what’s underneath it is a cutthroat2 competition where everyone is trying to get the better of3 everyone else.
Miranda, played by Meryl Streep, is editor-in-chief of the magazine who is said to be as hideous4 as the devil himself but the most powerful woman in fashion. She hires a new assistant, Andrea, played by Anne Hathaway, who is trying to build a career in journalism. While every woman in the office is dressed impeccable5 and wearing heels that seem to break any minute6, Andrea wears a plain blue sweater and black pumps. She looks more like a school teacher than someone in high fashion. Andrea is completely a fish out of water7, so to speak.
In this movie, Andrea uses a particular phrase a few times: “I didn’t have choice” or “I have no choice8“. We use this phrase to mean there’s nothing else we can do but to do what we’re doing. Well, sometimes, we really don’t have choice. But other times, or very often, we do have choice. In that case, having no choice is just an excuse.
Regarding the movie itself, I enjoyed it, to my surprise. I thought I would have to fast-forward9 it, just trying to find a couple of nice and catchy phrases. But, it’s better than that. One problem could be, people speak very fast. Well, they’re New Yorkers, after all. They walk fast, talk fast, and eat fast. They’ve been accustomed to10 living their lives with one foot always on the gas pedal11.

メリル・ストリープ演じるミランダはこの雑誌の編集長。悪魔もかくやという容赦のなさですが、業界では絶大な力を誇っています。彼女が新しいアシスタントを雇うのですが、ジャーナリストを目指すこの女性、アンドレアをアン・ハサウェイが演じています。他の女性社員はみな、一分の隙もなくドレスアップして、今にも折れそうなハイヒールを履いて出社しているところ、アンドレアは無愛想な青いセーターに黒のパンプスという出で立ち。高級ファッション誌で働く女性というより、学校の先生といった感じで、場違いも甚だしい。
さて、このアンドレアが映画の中で何度か使うフレーズがあります。「I didn’t have choice」あるいは「I have no choice」という表現です。他に選択肢がないときに、よく使うフレーズです。もちろん、ほんとうに選択肢がないときもあるのですが、時には、というかしばしば、実際には選択肢がある場合もある。そんな場合、「選択肢がない」は単なる言い訳にすぎません。
映画そのものについてですが、意外にもおもしろかったです。これは早送りで観て、気の利いたフレーズをいくつか拾うことになるかなと思ったのですが、それほど悪くなかった。一つ問題となりそうなのが、会話のスピードが速いこと。ま、ニューヨーカーですから、こんなもんでしょう。この街では歩くのも話すのも食べるのも速い。アクセル踏みっぱなしの人生に慣れちゃってるんですね。
