It slipped my mind. — 度忘れ

突然ですが、歳をとるにつれてド忘れすることが多くなったなぁ、と思うことありませんか ド忘れというのは記憶がなくなったわけではなく、記憶の検索に時間がかかるだけなんだそうです 歳をとると憶えていることも必然的に多くなるから、ド忘れする確率も上がるのだとか。そうは言っても、思い出せないときはイライラしますよね…
さて。今日はそんなときに使えるフレーズをご紹介します

　Let’s imagine. You knew you had to buy some cat food on your way home from work. You got home, you saw your cat and you realized you’d forgotten to buy it. Well, it slipped your mind¹. Or, you’re going to set your VCR to record your favorite TV program before going to work. You got to the office and realized you’d forgotten to set the machine. Oh, no, it slipped your mind.

　Now you know what phrase we’re going to learn today: slipping your mind. To slip in this instance means to be forgotten; to escape from your memory or mind. Let’s say, your doctor told you to take the pill before going to bed, but it slipped your mind. Now, what happened? You forgot to take the pill.

　It’s a very common expression. I believe somebody somewhere is using it even right now, right this minute², although nobody really likes to use it. If you want more examples of how to use this phrase, I’m sure there’re a lot of movies offering them. One such movie is Secret Window. It’s a Johnny Depp movie. The original story, Secret Window, Secret Garden, was written by Stephen King.

　It looks like a typical B movie, but as Johnny’s in it, it can’t be that cheap. Anyhow, I won’t particularly recommend it unless you’re his admirer³, like his face, voice or performance. But if you happen to watch it, find out what slips whose mind.

　もうお判りでしょう。今日覚えるフレーズはslipping your mindです。ここで使われるslipは「忘れられる、記憶や頭から消える」という意味です。例えば、かかりつけの医師に就寝前に薬を飲むよう指示されたとします。ここでIt slipped your mind.と言う場合、実際には何が起こったのでしょう。薬を飲み忘れたのですね。

　これは非常によく使われる表現です。まさに今この時も、どこかで誰かが使っているのではないでしょうか。もちろん、あまり使いたいフレーズではありませんが。映画などでもよく使われていますから、事例には事欠かないでしょう。例えば『シークレット・ウィンドウ』にも出てきます。ジョニー・デップ主演の作品で、原作はスティーヴン・キングの『秘密の窓、秘密の庭』です。

　典型的なB級映画にも見えますが、ジョニーが出ているのだから、そんなに安いはずもなし。まあ、ジョニーの熱烈なファン、彼の顔が好き、声が好き、演技が好きというのでない限り、特にはお奨めしないかな。でももし観ることがあったら、誰が何を度忘れしたのかチェックしてね。
