Christmas is just a week away1. I don’t know if you’re going to celebrate it religiously2, but I’m sure many of you have a very special plan for the occasion. It may be that you’ll spend it with a bunch of friends, someone special, family, or Mickey Mouse. Or, your plan may be to spend it rather quietly, staying in, enjoying homemade dishes, just kicking back3 in front of television. If that’s the case, you may want to get some videos, or DVDs, right? Well, I’ve got one for you: Noel, which literally means “Christmas”. If you’re looking for more fun, cheerful, jingle-jangle kind of movie, this may not serve your purpose4. It’s more for a quiet night.
The story takes place on Christmas Eve in New York City. It portrays the lives of five people who share little in common but loneliness on Christmas Eve. So there are several different storylines intersecting5 with each other. It has every element you’d expect of Christmas movie; love, compassion6, forgiveness and redemption7. I have to admit it’s a little predictable and hugely improbable8. But hey, it’s Christmas after all, supposed to be a time for miracles!
And there’re some good expressions worth learning. For instance, “I’m all ears“. “I’m all ears” means “I’m listening” or “I’m very interested”. You can use this phrase to encourage people to speak up. Let’s say, your friend looks a little concerned9. You think he may have a problem, but seems hesitant to tell you about it. Then you’ll say: “Hey, what’s the problem? Tell me. I’m all ears.” Or, your friend may be a bit gossipy and he’s got news for you. He isn’t hesitant to tell you about it but he likes to tantalize10 you. Oh, you’re so interested. You can’t wait to hear it. So, you’ll say: “Hey, tell me! I’m all ears!”

舞台はクリスマスイブのニューヨーク。イブに味わう寂しさ以外、これといって共通点のない5人の人生を描き、いくつかのストーリーラインを互いに絡ませつつ、物語は進行します。愛、思いやり、許し、救いなど、クリスマス映画にはお決まりの要素がそろっています。少々陳腐であまりにも起こりそうにない話ではあるのですが、ま、そこはクリスマスです。奇跡の季節ですから良しとしましょう。
学びがいのある表現もいくつか出てきます。例えば、I’m all ears。これは「ちゃんと聞いてます」、「興味津々です」という意味です。誰かに「話してごらん」と勧める時に用います。例えば、あなたの友人が何か悩んでいる様子。困ったことがあるのかもしれませんが、今ひとつはっきり言ってくれません。そこであなたは言います。「なあ、どうしたんだ?言ってごらんよ。じっくり聞くよ」 あるいはあなたの友人は少々ゴシップ好きで、また何やら噂話を仕込んできました。特に躊躇っているわけではなく、あなたを焦らしたい様子です。あなたは興味津々。是非とも拝聴したい。そこでこう言います。「ねえ、早く聞かせてよ!」
