　Have you noticed we’ve been seeing lots of remakes¹ lately both on the big screen² and the small one³. So, I’ve decided to follow this trend today.

　Alfie is a remake of the 1966 British film of the same title staring Michael Caine.

It’s a story about a young English lad⁴ named Alfie Elkins who is in the new version performed by Jude Law. Alfie lives life for seducing⁵ women, as he says he subscribes more to⁶ the European philosophy of life which means to him “wine and women”. While he loves women, he seems to have no respect for them. He uses such expressions as “expiration date⁷” or “shelf life⁸” for women, calling a kid an accessory. Most sadly, the moment he meets a woman, he starts finding small imperfections⁹, no matter how wonderful the woman might be. He can’t help it. Love is supposed to blind a man to all imperfections. But this formula doesn’t work for Alfie. No wonder the more he looks for love, the more he feels emptiness. He gets what he asks for.

　Well, I won’t particularly recommend this movie, you may feel bad or sad after watching it. There might even be some material damage, if you watch it with your girlfriend or boyfriend. Mind you, I will bear no responsibility. But the good news is I’ve found a nice phrase to learn for you.

　Alfie goes into a café where he meets his ex-girlfriend by chance. He has a little chat with her and just before he leaves her, he says, “It’s good running into¹⁰ you“. To run into someone means to meet someone unexpectedly. Interestingly, you can run into problems and difficulties instead of people. So, you may want to remember that as well.

　最近、映画でもテレビでもリメーク流行ですね。今日はこのトレンドに乗っかってみました。

　『アルフィ』は1966年公開の同名のイギリス映画のリメイクで、オリジナルの主演はマイケル・ケインでした。主人公はアルフィ・エルキンスというイギリス人の青年で、リメイク版ではジュード・ロウが演じています。アルフィはとんでもない女たらしで、本人は「ヨーロッパの人生哲学に共感する」と言っていますが、彼にとってのヨーロッパの人生哲学とはすなわち「酒と女」にほかなりません。それほど女好きにもかかわらず、女性に対する敬意はこれっぽっちもない。女性に対して「賞味期限」とか「保存期間」といった言い回しを使い、子どもはコブ呼ばわりです。何よりも悲しいのは、女性に出逢うやその瞬間から、それがどんなに素晴らしい女性でも、アラ探しを初めてしまう。そうせずにはいられないのです。愛は盲目のはずなんですが、どうやらこのお約束はアルフィには通じないらしい。愛を求めれば求めるほど、虚しさが募るのも道理でしょう。いわば自業自得。

　特にお奨めしたい映画ではないかな。見終わった後に気分を害したり、もの悲しい気持ちになったりするかもしれません。彼女とか彼氏といっしょに見たりしたら、重大な損害に発展するかも。責任は持てませんので、一応その旨ご承知おきくださいませ。それでもなかなか良いフレーズを見つけてきたので、悪い話ばかりではありません。

　アルフィがカフェに入って昔の彼女に遭遇するシーンです。ちょっと話をして、別れ際、アルフィが言います。”It’s good running into you.” run intoは誰かにばったり出会すことです。ちょっとおもしろいんですが、人だけではなく、問題や困難にぶち当たったときなどにも使えます。覚えておきましょう。
