Can you follow? — 分かる?

今日は日本人のキャストなのになぜか全編英語のセリフ、しかも西部劇…という風変わりな映画「ジャンゴ」から。セリフはわざとジャパニーズ・イングリッシュにしているようなので、リスニングの勉強にはならないかもしれませんが、日本人の英語の“クセ”を知るにはいい一本かも

　I watched the movie “Sukiyaki Western Django” directed by Takashi Miike. I was very much interested in this film because I knew the actors and actresses were Japanese but speaking in English all through the film. Therefore, I expected this could serve¹ as English learning material for us. Unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. I don’t know Kaori’s, but at least my thumb is down. Honestly, I didn’t even finish it. I simply didn’t find it worth. But who knows, you might like it. I just want to make sure I’m by no means² recommending it by talking about it.

　Still, Time for English can’t fall short³ of your expectations⁴, which I suppose are to help you learn or improve English. So I’ve decided to discuss one expression I came across in this movie, which is “Can you follow?” I’m sure you know what the verb ‘follow⁵‘ means. It means ‘to come after somebody or something’ or ‘to go after somebody or something’. For instance, first comes A and then B. In this situation, we say B follows A or A is followed by B. If you look up in a dictionary, I guess this is the first definition you’ll find.

　Now, the word ‘follow’ also means ‘to understand’. So, “Can you follow?” means “Can you, or do you understand?” Let’s say, you’re explaining something to somebody and you want to make sure the person understands what you’re saying. Then you can ask, “Can you follow me?” or “Can you follow my explanation?” Do you follow? I’m sure you do.

　三池崇史監督の『スキヤキ・ウェスタン・ジャンゴ』を観ました。出演する役者は日本人ですが、台詞は終始英語ということで、前々から興味を持っていた作品でした。英語の教材として使えるんじゃないかと期待もしていました。残念なことに、教材としては期待外れでした。kaoriクンはどうだか分かりませんが、私の評価は良くありません。正直、最後まで観なかったほど。わざわざ全編観るまでもないかと思ってしまいました。ま、皆さんの意見はまた違うかもしれません。ただ、ここで話題にしたからといって、是非観てくださいと推奨しているわけではありません。

　映画はおもしろくなくても、〈エイゴの時間〉が英語を学びたい、上達させたいと来て下さる皆さんの期待を裏切るわけにはいきませんね。そこで、映画に出てくる “Can you follow?” という表現についてお話します。followの意味については皆さんご存知のことでしょう。誰か、あるいは何かに続いて来る、あるいは行くという意味です。例えば、まずAが来て、その次にBが来るとします。この場合、「BがAにfollowする」とか「AがBによってfollowされる」と言います。辞書を引くと、多分、この定義が一番最初に出てくるものと思います。

　さて、followには「理解する」という意味もあります。つまり、”Can you follow?” で、「分かりますか?」という意味になります。例えば、あなたが誰かに何かを説明しているとします。あなたはその人がちゃんと理解しているか確認したい。そこであなたはこう訊ねるわけです。”Can you follow me?(私の言っていることが分かりますか?)” とか “Can you follow my explanation?(私の説明が理解できますか?)” 分かりますか? 分かりますよね。
