　Kaori and I were talking about spelling problems and I had a story.

　An American friend of mine once asked me, “Hey Junko, where is w in answer?” I didn’t know at once what she meant. She asked me again. “How do you spell the word answer?” Oh, that’s what she meant. Of course, you spell it A-N-S-W-E-R. So, the w in answer sits between S and E. As we know, they have silent letters² in English words such as “answer”, “honest” and “island”, and some people have problem spelling those words.

　And Kaori said she got often confused about the spelling of “bicycle”. There are i and y in the word and which comes first? I once had the same problem in fact, but if you break the word into bi and cycle, it’ll make more sense³. bi is a prefix⁴ meaning “two” or “both”. So, a bicycle is a vehicle⁵ with two wheels.

　Now, if you listen to morning news or evening news in English, you may have heard of the word “bilateral⁶“. What “bilateral” means? First of all, when the U.S., Japan, China, Russia, Korea and North Korea get together and discuss the nuclear⁷ issue, they’re having six-party talks⁸; whereas when the U.S. and North Korea, or Japan and North Korea discuss between the two countries, they’re having bilateral talks.

　Now, what other words can you think of that have the prefix bi-? Well, I speak two languages so I’m bilingual. I’m sure you’ve heard of a “binary code”. When you look at a binary code, you’ll see the only two numbers; ones and zeros. Or, if you’re reading a magazine that appears every two weeks, you’re subscribing to⁹ a biweekly¹⁰ magazine. Make sense?

　kaoriクンと英語のスペルについて話をしたときのこと、ちょっとしたエピソードを披露しました。

　アメリカ人の友人がこんなことを訊いてきました。「ねえjunko、answerのwはどこ?」 何を問われているのか直ぐには分かりませんでした。彼女は質問を繰り返します。「answerって単語、どう綴るんだっけ?」 ああ、そういうこと。。。もちろん、answerの綴りはANSWER。ですから、〈w〉は〈s〉と〈e〉の間ですね。ご存知の通り、英単語にはサイレント・レターという発音しない文字が存在します。answer(w)、honest(h)、island(s)などです。このような単語のスペルが苦手な人は確かにいるようです。

　kaoriクンはよくbicycleの綴りで戸惑うそうです。この単語には〈i〉と〈y〉がありますが、さてどっちが先に来るんだっけ? 実は私も時々混乱していました。でもbicycleを〈bi〉と〈cycle〉に分けてみると、ああなるほどね、と思えるでしょう。〈bi〉は「2」とか「両方」を表す接頭辞です。つまり、bicycleは「二つの車輪を持つ乗り物(自転車)」です。

　さて朝のニュースや夕方のニュースを英語で聞いている方、bilateralという言葉を耳にしたことはありませんか? bilateral、どんな意味なんでしょう。まず、米国、日本、中国、ロシア、韓国、北朝鮮が集まって核問題について話し合う場合、これは6カ国協議です。一方、米国と北朝鮮、あるいは日本と北朝鮮が二国間で協議することもありますが、これがbilateral、二国間協議です。

　〈bi-〉という接頭辞を持つ単語、他にはどんなものを思いつくでしょう。私は二つの言語を話すのでバイリンガル。あるいは、バイナリコードという言葉をご存知と思いますが、このコードには1もしくは0という二つの数字しか含まれません。もしあなたが二週間ごとに発行される雑誌を読んでいるなら、この雑誌はバイウィークリー(隔週)の雑誌です。分かったかな?
