　”White Palace” is a 1990 movie directed by Luis Mandoki, co-starring Susan Sarandon and James Spader. A 27-year old wealthy, good-looking man falls for¹ a 42-year old waitress working at a burger joint, if you want to make a long story short². To make it even shorter, it’s a story about an unlikely³ relationship.

　This movie reminds me of the coined word⁴ “ara4”, a shortened form of “around forty”, which may well be nominated for Buzzword of the Year, although it’s more of a commercial term I think than cultural or social, representing a rather lucrative⁵ market.

　Anyhow, if you’re part of the age group, looking for a relationship, if not unlikely, or ready for adventure, the movie is definitely for you. You may find yourself empathizing with⁶ Nora Baker. And of course, if you’re not around forty, or even way above it, married and happy with your life, I’m sure you can still enjoy it. This is one of my favorite in the romantic category.

　Now, you’re with us to learn a phrase. So, here’s one for you. In the movie, Nora, the forty-something year old waitress played by Susan Sarandon, says to Max, her young boyfriend, “I just want to get that straight⁷” when they had a row⁸. To get something straight means to understand something correctly. This is an everyday expression. People use it all the time when they want to understand something correctly, catch on to⁹ it or want clarification¹⁰. Let’s get this straight. Let me get that straight. It’s short and pretty straightforward, a piece of cake.

　『ぼくの美しい人だから』は1990年製作の映画で、監督はルイス・マンドーキ、主演はスーザン・サランドンとジェイムズ・スペイダーです。27歳のリッチでハンサムな男が、ハンバーガーショップで働く42歳のウェイトレスに恋をする。うんと端折って言えばこんな話です。もっと端折るなら、ありそうもない恋物語といったところ。

　この映画で「アラフォー」という例の新語を思い出しました。「アラウンド40」の略語ですが、今年の流行語大賞の候補にもなりそうです。文化的とか社会的というよりは、なかなかにもうかりそうな市場を表す商業用語といった感じがしないでもありませんが。

　それはそれ。もしあなたがこの年代で、ありそうもない恋とは言わないが、でも恋はしたい、冒険だってしてやるぞ、なんて感じているなら、まさにあなたのための映画です。主人公のノーラ・ベイカーにどっぷり感情移入しちゃってください。もちろん、40歳前後じゃなくても、いやそれよりずっと上の年代でも、結婚して現在の生活に満足していても、きっと楽しめる作品だと思いますよ。恋愛分野ではイチオシの1本です。

　さて、皆さん、フレーズの勉強に来てるんでしたね。ではこれを覚えてください。映画の中で、スーザン・サランドンが演じた40何某のウェイトレス、ノラが、年下の恋人マックスと口げんかをしているとき、こういう台詞を口にします。 “I just want to get that straight” 何かをget straightするとは、それを正しく理解するという意味です。日常的に使われる表現です。何かを正しく理解しようとするとき、話の内容を飲み込む、あるいは確認して明らかにしたいときなど、しばしばこの表現が用いられます。Let’s get this straightとかLet me get that straightとか。短いし、ストレートに理解するみたいな感じで、簡単でしょう?
