One of a kind — さよならポール・ニューマン

つい先日、アメリカの名俳、ポール・ニューマンさんが亡くなったと思ったら、今度は日本の名優である緒方拳さんがお亡くなりになったそう お二人とも、シブくて、とてもカッコイイ俳優さんでした。ご冥福を心からお祈りしたいと思います。

　If you ask me who are my favorite movie stars, I can name¹ quite a few names as I’ve been watching quite a few movies over many years. But Paul Newman is definitely and always one of the first five names on the list, although one third of the movies he appeared in were first shown before I was borne.

　Paul Newman died Friday at his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83. The cause was cancer.

　For me, the news arrived on Saturday, the 27th of September, as I walked in a hotel room in New York and turned the TV on. It was shocking. I know it may sound odd² but I received it as a personal event in a sense. I remember when I decided to go for a student exchange program which was being offered by the school I went to, I put up a large map of the United States on the wall in my room and pinned Paul Newman’s picture right in the middle of it. I did so as a token of³ commitment. He was an American icon for me and I was in love with him, especially for his brilliant blue eyes.

　Paul Newman once talked about his own eyes, which was quoted in a digital edition of the New York Times. “I picture my epitaph⁴,” he once said. “Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown.” He didn’t die a failure⁵ and of course it’s not because his eyes didn’t turn brown.

　Right now I don’t have much time to watch movies but I’ll try to talk about some of his works over the next few weeks such as “The Sting”, “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge” and “The Verdict”. 　好きな映画スターは誰かと訊かれれば、けっこうな数の名前を挙げると思う。何しろ何年にもわたって、けっこうな数の映画を見てきましたから。でもポール・ニューマンの名前は確実に、そしていつでもトップファイブに入っています。彼の出演作品の三分の一は、私の生まれる前に封切られたものなのですが。

　ポール・ニューマン、金曜日にコネティカット州ウェストポートの自宅で死去。享年83歳。ガンだった。

　彼の訃報に触れたのは9月27日の土曜日、ニューヨークのホテルにチェックインして、部屋のテレビをつけたときでした。何という衝撃。奇妙に思われるかもしれませんが、ある意味とてもパーソナルな事件として、彼の死を受け止めました。今も覚えているのですが、私の通う高校の交換留学制度にトライしようと決めたとき、自分の部屋の壁に大きなアメリカの地図を掲げ、その真ん中にポール・ニューマンの写真をピンで留めました。言ってみれば決意の印のつもりでした。私にとって、彼はアメリカという国の偶像でした。ポール・ニューマンに憧れ、あのすばらしく碧い瞳に強く惹かれたものです。

　ポール・ニューマンは自らの瞳についてこんな風に語ったことがあります。ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙のデジタル版からの引用です。「自分の墓碑銘が思い浮かぶ。瞳の色が茶色に変わったがゆえに日の目を見ずに死んだ男、ポール・ニューマンここに永眠す。」 彼は日の目を見ずに死ななかったし、もちろんそれは瞳の色が茶色に変わらなかったからではありません。

　今、映画を見る時間がないのですが、この先何週間かかけて、彼の出演作品について語りたいと思います。『スティング』、『ミスター&ミセス・ブリッジ』、『評決』あたりを考えています。是非これをという作品があったら知らせてください。今日はリピートレッスンはやりません。代わりに黙祷を捧げたいと思います。
