最近、海外ドラマが人気ですね 「アグリー・ベティ」「ヴェロニカ・マーズ」、そして「セックス・アンド・ザ・シティ 」…
「Smap!Smap!」では、パロディにされたりもしています。今クールのドラマ「スキャンダル」も、SATCを意識していて、本家本元のパトリシアフィールドがスタイリストを担当しているとか。
遅まきながら、エイゴの時間でも取り上げていきたいと思います

英文スクリプト
　Are you an SATC fan? Have you been following the story? Have you seen the movie? Well, I’ve just watched the very first episode of the first season. Today we have much greater access to American TV dramas, romantic ones, comedy, mystery and suspense, action, political, you name it¹. And if you choose something like “Sex and The City”, something that offers contemporary, common lifestyle topics, it can be pretty good learning material for English learners. In fact, when I was in the US, I watched a lot of TV dramas, naturally all in English and no Japanese subtitles. ABC Daytime was my favorite. I started with “All My Children”, continued to watch “One Life To Live” and then “General Hospital”. I think that helped.

　I think “Sex and The City” should work. I don’t know if there’s more to learn than English, but it’s contemporary, lifestyle-oriented, and fun to watch. Even in the half-hour episode I watched, there’re loads of phrases I want to share with you. Actually, there’re a couple of phrases we’ve learned together, such as all-time favorite and taking a rain check.

　Now, what we’re going to learn today is an expression to ask somebody what her job is. In the drama, Mr. Big asks Carrie, “what do you do for work?” Very simple as it is, if you don’t speak English, somehow you won’t come up with the expression. What do you do for work? You get it? Now, it’s a personal question, and any personal question is always delicate. So, when you use the phrase, use common sense as well.

　皆さんはSATCファンかしら? はじめからずっと見てる? 映画は? ついこの間、ファーストシーズンの第1回を見ました。今ではアメリカのテレビドラマもすっかりお馴染み。恋愛物、コメディ、ミステリーやサスペンス、アクション物から政治物まで何でもござれです。そして「セックス・アンド・ザ・シティ」のような現代物、みんなに共通のライフスタイルをテーマとしたシリーズを選べば、英語学習の教材としても有用です。実際、私もアメリカでは随分とテレビドラマを見ました。よく見ていたのがABCの昼メロ。「オール・マイ・チルドレン」からはじまって、「ワン・ライフ・トゥ・リブ」、その後の「ジェネラル・ホスピタル」まで、ぶっ続けで見たものです。けっこう役に立ったと思います。

　「セックス・アンド・ザ・シティ」もいいんじゃないかな。英語の他に学べるものはないかもしれませんが、現代物だし、ライフスタイル系だし、それにおもしろい。ほんの30分程度のエピソードでしたが、覚えたいフレーズも満載。all-time favorite、taking a rain checkなど、ここでご紹介したフレーズもいくつか出てきました。

　さて、今日覚えるのは人に職業を訊ねるときの表現です。ドラマの中では、ミスター・ビッグがキャリーにこう訊いていましたね。”What do you do for work?” 簡単なフレーズですが、英語を使わない人には出てきにくい表現です。”What do you do for work?”　覚えましたか？　それからこれは個人的な質問です。個人的な質問というのはどんなものでもデリケートです。使うときは常識もいっしょに使ってくださいね。
