short notice — 急なお願い

もうすぐクリスマスですね 今日は典型的なラブコメ 映画『トゥー・ウィークス・ノーティス』からフレーズを紹介します。英語をそのままカタカナにしただけのタイトルなので、内容が想像できない方も多いのでは どういう意味かは、今日のレッスンで。

　I don’t know why but somehow, around this time of the year, I feel like watching a Hugh Grant movie. So, I’ve decided to go with this one: Two Weeks Notice¹. It’s a romantic comedy. The plot is pretty much predictable. A woman meets a man and they fall in love and a lot of things happen in between. In this movie, a woman is Lucy Kelson, a Harvard-trained lawyer, played by Sandra Bullock.A man is George Wade, a millionaire and the head of the Wade Corporation, and off course a playboy, performed by Hugh Grant.

　I’m not going tell you how they meet and fall in love. Instead, look at the title “two weeks notice”. In this movie, Lucy works for the Wade Corporation and gives her two weeks notice to George. It means she’s telling him she’s going to leave the company in two weeks. Another example. Let’s say, when you make a booking with a travel agency, you’ll receive its cancellation policy, which may say, “Less than 14 days notice, no refund²“. This means, say, you want to cancel your trip and it’s still three weeks away, then, you can get a refund, if not in full, at least some percentage of what you’ve paid. Contrarily, you’re supposed to leave for vacation in one week, but something happens and you have to cancel it. I’m sorry, no refund will be made.

　Here’s a very common expression using “short notice³“. How to use it? Well, let’s say, you’re supposed to meet somebody tomorrow but you won’t be able to make it. Then you’ll say, “I’m sorry for such short notice but I have to cancel the meeting”. Or, you invited your friend to a home party just three days ago. He’s a busy person but shows up. So, you may say, “Thank you for coming at such short notice“.

　なぜでしょう 一年のこの時期になると、なぜか無性にヒュー・グラントの映画が見たくなるのです なので今日はコレ、『トゥー・ウィークス・ノーティス』を選びました。ラブコメ です。話としてはかな～りありきたりです 女と男が出逢って恋に落ちる、その間にいろいろある、みたいな この映画では女はルーシー・ケルソン、ハーヴァード出の弁護士でサンドラ・ブロックが演じています。男はジョージ・ウェイド、大金持ちでウェイド・コーポレーションの社長、もちろんプレイボーイ。演じているのはヒュー・グラントです。

　出逢いから恋に落ちるまでの経緯は省きます。代わりにタイトルの”two weeks notice”を見てみましょう。この映画では、ウェイド・コーポレーションで働くルーシーが、ジョージに two weeks notice （2週間前予告）を突きつけます。つまり、2週間後には会社を辞めると言っているのですね 事例をもうひとつ。例えば、旅行の予約をするとします。予約の際にキャンセルなどについて記した旅行規約をもらいます。そこには「Less than 14 days notice, no refund（出発日までの日数が14日未満の場合、返金は致しません ）」などと書いてあるでしょう。つまり、3週間前のキャンセルなら、全額ではないにしても、代金のいくらかは払い戻されるということです。反対に、例えば1週間後に休暇旅行に出発するはずだったのに、何らかの理由でキャンセルしなければならなくなったとします。残念ですが、この場合は一銭も返金されません

　ここで”short notice“を使う、よく使われる表現をご紹介しましょう。どう使うのか 例えば、明日、誰かと会う約束があるとしましょうか。でもあなたは行けなくなってしまった こんなときは、「I’m sorry for such short notice but I have to cancel the meeting（突然で申し訳ありませんが、お約束をキャンセルさせてください）」と言います。あるいは、お友だちをホームパーティに招待しました。ほんの3日前のことです。彼はとても忙しい人なのですが、パーティに来てくれました そこであなたはこう言います。「Thank you for coming at such short notice(急なお誘いなのに、来てくれてありがとう)」。
