さて。今日のレッスンは映画『トゥー・ウィークス・ノーティス』から。

　In the movie “Two Weeks Notice” Sandra Bullock plays a Harvard-trained lawyer, Lucy Kelson. Lucy is socially active, working for legal aid¹, involved in saving community buildings of historical value. When she’s offered a job at the Wade Corporation as a chief counsel², she doesn’t like George and his company but accepts the offer, because in return George promises to help her save the community hall in her neighborhood. Lucy is a strong, energetic, cause-oriented³ woman who, as George puts it, makes Gandhi look like a used car salesman.

　Let’s see how George’s friend and chauffeur⁴ describes her and learn the expression. He says, “she is hard to control“. It means you can’t tell her what to do or what not to do. She is a decision-maker unlike her boss, George, who can’t even decide how he should be dressed for a television interview and depends on Lucy.

　Now, you may have somebody in your office you prefer not to work with. He may be too demanding, or a constant complainer. Maybe he doesn’t listen to you or anybody. Maybe just a lack of chemistry⁵, I don’t know. But for you, he is hard to work with. In the similar situation, you could also say, he is hard to deal with. Now, who’s most popular in the entertainment industry these days who’s always on TV, radio, or magazines. Whoever it is, he or she is hard to avoid. How about your girlfriend or boyfriend? If it is difficult to make him or her happy, this person is hard to please. And all I can say is good luck.

　映画『トゥー・ウィークス・ノーティス』で、サンドラ・ブロックはハーヴァード出の弁護士ルーシー・ケルソンを演じました。ルーシーは社会活動に熱心な女性で、お金のない人の法律相談に乗ったり、歴史的価値のある地域の建物の保存運動に参加したりしています。そういうルーシーがウェイド・コーポレーションから会社の主任顧問弁護士の職を提示されます。ジョージも会社も嫌いだけれど 、彼女はこの申し出を受けることにします。その見返りとして、ジョージが地域の公民館保存に協力すると約束したからです。ルーシーは意志が強く、バイタリティがあって、自分の信念をとても大事にする女性です。ジョージをして「君に比べたら、ガンジーだって中古車のセールスマンに見えるよ 」と言わしめるほどに

　そんなルーシーを、ジョージの友人兼お抱え運転手は何と表現しているか。今日はこの表現を学びます 彼は「she is hard to control（彼女はコントロールしにくい、手なずけにくい）」と言っています。つまり、誰も彼女にああしろ、こうするなとは言えないのです 彼女は自分のことは自分で決める。雇い主のジョージとは大違い。彼はテレビ 出演のための服装さえ自分で決められません ルーシーに頼りっきりです。

　さて、職場にできればこの人ととは仕事をしたくないなあ 、という人がいるとします。注文や愚痴が多いのかもしれません。あなたの意見、というか誰の意見にも耳を傾けない人なのかもしれません。あるいは、単に相性が合わないだけかもしれません どんな理由であれ、あなたにとって、彼は hard to work with（一緒に仕事がしづらい）な人なのです 同じような状況で、hard to deal with（扱いにくい）という表現もよく使われます ところで、今芸能界で一番人気は誰でしょう 　テレビでもラジオでも雑誌でも引っ張りだこ。誰にせよ、この人は hard to avoid（避けがたい）な人です ではあなたのガールフレンド、あるいはボーイフレンドはどうでしょう もし彼もしくは彼女がちょっとやそっとのことで喜ばない人なら、この人物は hard to please（喜ばせるのが難しい、気難しい）な人ですね そういう彼氏彼女を持ったあなた、私としては幸運をお祈りするばかりです
