I also read books and watched DVDs. One of the movies I saw is “The Holiday” starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. It’s a story about two women who live 6,000 miles apart but are faced with a similar personal crisis. Iris is in England and in love with a man named Jasper who is about to marry another woman. Iris meets Amanda online through a home exchange website. They decide to switch their houses for two weeks. So, Iris moves to Amanda’s house in Los Angeles, away from Jasper, trying to get over4 unrequited love5. But toward the end of the story, Jasper shows up in L.A. totally out of the blue. He says to Iris he traveled half the globe just to see her. Iris is almost talked into6 getting back with him, but at the last minute realizes that Jasper is still engaged. He’s still a two-timer7. She says “This was a really close call8” and finally kicks him out of the house.
Now, here’s a phrase for you to learn: close call. A close call means a narrow escape. I’ll give you an example. Let’s say, you’re driving a car, see a child in front of you, but you manage to hit the brakes just in time to avoid an accident. You’ll say, “My God, that was a close call“. A few months ago I was at Heathrow Airport to catch a plane to New York. First I went to the wrong gate, then moved to the right one. When I got there, the airlines ground staff was about to close the gate. I almost missed the plane. That was a close call.
