Behave yourself! — お行儀良くしなさい!

お行儀が悪かったり、礼儀が足りない人に対して、「もう… ちゃんとしなさいっ 」と言いたいとき、ありますよね 今日はそんなシーンで使える決まり文句を紹介します

　The nearby video shop was running a special offer over the weekend when they let you have a DVD for 100 yen for a whole week. So, I got two movies: All the King’s Men and The Golden Compass. I tried All the King’s Men for the first twenty minutes and gave it up. It didn’t seem promising for a phrase search and besides it wasn’t quite appropriate for English learning because of a southern accent which was said to be exaggerated¹ among critics. So, I switched to The Golden Compass.

　It’s a fantasy adventure set in a different world where your soul² lives outside of your body in a form of animal such as cat, mouse, rabbit, monkey, or some kind of bird. It’s like your companion animal³ able to speak a human language. I like the idea. I don’t know if you can choose whatever animal you like, but if you can, what would you like to have? You may want to be wild: black panther, white lion, silver fox, or falcon.

　Now, as to a phrase to learn, tell you the truth, I didn’t get much luck, so let’s learn this word “behave⁴“. The main character is a girl called Lyra. Lyra is a difficult child so to speak. She doesn’t like to be told what to do, and often doesn’t do what she’s told to do. In one scene, her uncle says to her, “It’s none of your business, so try and behave”. To behave means to act properly or to be polite. You may want to learn this expression, “behave yourself⁵“, which is often used by moms and dads for their children when they have bad manners, such as running around in a somebody else’s living room, speaking out loud on a bus, or sneaking⁶ food at night. “Behave yourself!“. And of course, when you’re talking to two or more people, you’ll say, behave yourselves.

　週末に近所のビデオ屋で割り引きキャンペーンをやっていました。DVD1本を1週間100円でレンタルできるキャンペーンです 2本借りました。『オール・ザ・キングスメン』と『ライラの冒険～黄金の羅針盤』です。『オール・ザ・キングスメン』は最初の20分で諦めました 適当なフレーズがなさそうだったし、批評家言うところの大仰な南部なまりが英語教材には向かないと思ったからです で、『黄金の羅針盤』に切り替えました。

　こちらはいわゆるファンタジー・アドベンチャーで、舞台は私たちの住む世界とは別の世界。そこでは人の魂が体の外に存在していて、猫とかネズミとかウサギとか、猿とか鳥とか、動物の形をしています。人間の言葉を話すペットを連れてるようなもんですね。なかなかステキ なアイディアです。好きな動物を選べるのかどうか分かりませんが、もし選べるとしたら、あなたはどんな動物がいい せっかくだからワイルドにいきたいもんです。黒豹とか白ライオンとか銀狐とかハヤブサとか

　さてフレーズですが、正直なところ、こちらも余り芳しくない 今日は behave という言葉を取り上げましょう 物語の主人公はライラという少女なのですが、この子はいわゆる手の焼ける気難しい子どもです。人に指図されるのが嫌いで、言われた通りにしないこともしばしば ある場面で、少女の叔父さんがこう言います。「お前には関係ないことだ、ちょっとはおとなしくしてなさい 」 behave はその場に相応しい振る舞いをする、礼儀正しくするという意味です。ここでは behave oneself という表現を覚えましょう お母さんやお父さんがマナーの悪い子どもに対してよく使う表現です。例えば人様の家の居間で走り回る とか、バスの中で大声で話すとか、夜中 にこっそりおやつを食べるとか、そういうことをする子どもには一言、Behave yourself と言ってやるわけです。もちろん、相手が複数なら behave yourselvesです。
