4月は新生活のシーズンですね リスナーの皆さんの中には、新社会人 になった方、転勤や異動になった方など、新天地でがんばっている方もいらっしゃると思います。
今日は、自己紹介でも使えるフレーズ「happy to be part of」を学習しましょう

英文スクリプト
　Across many miles, our fellow Japanese men and women are making their dreams come true¹. For example, it’s exciting to see young athletes grabbing the spotlight² in the international sporting arena. Most recently, the World Baseball Classic is still fresh in our minds³, where Japan won the championship for the second time in a row⁴. And some of the Japanese players, such as Ichiro, Matsuzaka, and Jojima, are playing in the major league.

　Now today’s hero is not an athlete but an astronaut⁵. Following the successful launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery on March 15, 45-year-old astronaut Wakata-san joined the ISS or International Space Station as the first Japanese to become a resident crew member. Resident means he’ll stay there for three and half months. It must be truly exciting, although it’s going to be three and half months without a hot tub.

　I read the news about President Obama calling the astronauts from the White House. When receiving the call, Station commander Mike Fincke said, “Mr. President, we go around the planet once every 90 minutes. We see 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets every day.” It’s amazing, isn’t it?

　Wakata-san had a chat with President, too. He said, “We have 16 countries working together in this wonderful project and I’m just happy to be part of it⁶.“

　This is a good expression to learn. When you say you’re part of a project, you’re a member of that project, you’re participating in⁷ it. Or, if you say you’re not part of a conspiracy⁸, then you’re not involved in⁹ that conspiracy, you have nothing to do with it. This is a very common phrase: you’re part of it, or you’re not part of it.

　でも今日の主役はスポーツ選手ではなく、宇宙飛行士です。3月15日のスペースシャトル・ディスカバリーの打ち上げ 成功に続き、45歳の宇宙飛行士若田さんが国際宇宙ステーション(ISS)に到着しました 日本人初のレジデント・クルー誕生です レジデントですから、若田さんの滞在は3ヶ月半におよびます 熱いお風呂はないけれど 、それでもワクワクするような3ヶ月半なのでしょうね

　彼ら宇宙飛行士に向けて、オバマ大統領がホワイトハウスから電話をかけたという記事 を読みました。電話を受けたステーション・コマンダーのマイク・フィンクさんはこう言っています。「大統領、私たちは90分ごとに地球を1周 しています。毎日、16回の日の出と16回の日の入りを見ているんですよ 」 すごい

　若田さんも大統領と言葉を交わしたようです。彼はこう言っています。「この素晴らしいプロジェクトには16カ国が参加しています。I’m just happy to be part of it、つまり、私自身、このプロジェクトに関わることができてほんとうに嬉しい」

　なかなかすてきなフレーズです。もしあなたが part of a project なら、あなたはそのプロジェクトの一員である、そのプロジェクトに参加しているという意味です。あるいは、not part of a conspiracy なら、あなたはその陰謀には関わっていない、まったくの無関係だ、ということです。 part of～、not part of～。とってもよく使われるフレーズです
