What are you getting at? — 何が言いたいの?

カンタンと思える単語ほど、いろんな意味を持つので使い方が難しいですよね その代表格ともいえる get を使った慣用句、get at が今日のトピックです 今回は一文まるごと、そのまま覚えてしまいましょう

　There’s only a small video shop in my neighborhood. I always wish there would be a larger one with a large stock of old movies. But as far as getting new release titles is concerned¹, there’s no problem.

　So, “Married Life” is one of those new DVDs in the shop. I read the synopsis or story description on the back of the case and it seemed interesting, so I agreed to pay 400 yen for a night.

　The story is about a married man, Harry, who falls in love with a much younger girl. Harry wants to leave his wife, Pat, to live with the girl, but he’s convinced Pat couldn’t live without him. So, he decides to kill her, rather than leaving her suffer² alone.

　The movie seemed quite promising at the beginning with the chic³ mid-century ambience⁴. But honestly, my conclusion is that it’ not as good as I thought it would be. Having said that, if you look for a movie to help your English learning, then I’ll say “Married Life” will serve your purpose⁵ very well. People speak decent⁶ English. They don’t talk too fast. And the story is not difficult to follow. In fact, it’s not a bad movie. Who knows, you may like it.

　When you watch it, you want to listen to this phrase: What are you getting at⁷? I won’t tell you who says it, or when and where it’s said. “What are you getting at?” means “what are you trying to say?” or “what do you mean?” So, instead of saying “I don’t understand what you’re saying”, you can say “I don’t understand what you’re getting at”.

　『ああ、結婚生活』も新作DVD。ケース裏側の粗筋を読んで面白そうだなと思い、1泊400円でしたが借りてきました

　物語の主人公はハリーという男で、既婚者ですが自分よりずっと若い女性を好きになってしまいます 彼はこの女性といっしょになるために、妻のパットと離婚したい。でもパットは夫の自分なくして生きてはいけないと確信しています。そこで、独りぼっちで苦しませるよりは、殺してしまおうと考えます

　洒落たミッドセンチュリー風なムードが漂い、出だしこそ、これはいけそう、と思ったのですが、結論としては、思ったほど良くはなかったかなというところ でも、英語の勉強のために映画を見たい人ならお奨めかも。登場人物はみな、きれいな英語を話しているし、無駄に早口でもない。物語も分かりにくいものではありません。実際、悪い出来ではないのです。人によってはけっこう気に入るかもしれません。

　もし見るなら、是非このフレーズに注目してください。What are you getting at? いつ誰がどの場面で言った台詞かは言いません。”What are you getting at?”は「何を言おうとしているの?、何が言いたいの?」といった意味です。「あなたが何を言っているのか理解できない」と言うとき、”I don’t understand what you’re saying” と言う代わりに、”I don’t understand what you’re getting at” と言ってもいいわけです
