最近世間を騒がせている豚インフル とうとう日本でも感染者が発見されました 今のところは、感染拡大防止の検疫はうまくいっているようです。

今日はこの「うまく対処できている」という表現をマスターしましょう

　As soon as the Golden Week holidays started, the bad news spread¹, literally around the globe: swine flu². We learned the word “swine” in the past lesson. A swine is a pig. So, some people call this influenza “pig flu”. But American news anchors are using the term “swine flu”, so I’m going to follow them and call it “swine flu” instead of “pig flu”.

　One of the words which we’ve been hearing in the swine flu related news is “pandemic³“. Pandemic means having widespread⁴ effect. When an infectious disease⁵, such as influenza, becomes very widespread and affects a whole region, a continent⁶, or even the world, it’s a pandemic disease. The World Health Organization or WHO raised the pandemic alert level from phase 3 to phase 4 on April 28, and just two days later, 4 to 5, as more verified cases were reported.

　Now, I’ve been hearing another phrase in the relevant news: “under control⁷” and “out of control⁸“. When something is in a state of being successfully controlled, it’s under control. When it’s not, out of control. When the news was first reported, I saw Mexican government officials or hospital managers trying to keep people calm, saying “the situation’s under control” or “everything’s under control”. Another example: When you say “I have everything under control”, that means “everything is fine, no problem, count on me and leave it to me”. Of course, the expression can be used in different situations including those that are less serious than pandemic diseases, at office or school or even in your kitchen if you like.

　ゴールデンウィークが始まるや、良くないニュースが、文字通り、地球規模で広がりました。swine flu(豚インフルエンザ)のニュースです。swineという単語は以前に勉強しましたね。swineとはpig、豚のことです。そんなわけで、このインフルエンザをpig fluと呼ぶ人々もいます。アメリカのニュースキャスターはswine fluという言葉を使っているようなので、私もpig fluではなく、swine fluと呼ぶことにしましょう。

　豚インフル関連のニュースでよく耳にする言葉の一つがpandemic(パンデミック)です。pandemicとは広範囲な影響力を持つという意味です。インフルエンザのような感染症が非常に広域に発生し、地域全体、大陸全体、それどころか世界全体に影響を及ぼすような場合、これはpandemic disease、つまり汎発性の流行病ということになります。世界保健機構(WHO)は4月28日、世界的大流行に備える警戒レベルをフェーズ3からフェーズ4に引き上げましたが、確定的な感染者が次々と報告されるなか、そのわずか2日後にはさらに4から5へと引き上げました。

　さて、この関連のニュースでは、under controlとかout of controlというフレーズもよく聞きます。あるものがうまくコントロールされている状態にあるとき、これはunder controlであると言います。コントロールされていなければ、out of controlです。豚インフルのニュースが最初に伝えられた際、メキシコの政府や病院の関係者が市民を落ち着かせようとして、「The situation’s under control.(状況はちゃんと管理されています)」、「Everything’s under control.(すべてうまく対処しています)」と言っているのを見ました。また、「I have everything under control.(万事、制御下にある)」と言えば、それは「万事うまくいっている、何の問題もない、私を信じて任せなさい」という意味になります。もちろん、この表現は、世界的な感染症ほど深刻でない場合も含め、いろいろな状況下で使うことができます。職場や学校はもちろん、台所で使われることだってあります。
