　”The Dead Pool” is the fifth and the last of the series. Set in San Francisco, SFPD Inspector Harry Callahan protects celebrities on a hit list².

　In the first 15 or 20 minutes, a film producer is killed in a Chinatown restaurant robbery³. Callahan and his Chinese-American partner Quan happen to be there. Harry asks Quan who the dead man is. Quan says, “Some poor guy who’s in the wrong place at the wrong time⁴“.

　The wrong place at the wrong time. You may have heard this expression somewhere, maybe in a detective story or movie. It means “unlucky to be somewhere”. Let’s say, something bad happened to you but you weren’t responsible for what happened. You didn’t make a mistake or anything. You’re just unlucky to be there. You’re in the wrong place at the wrong time. Let’s say, a drunk driver hit a pedestrian⁵ who’s walking on the elevated walkway⁶. It wasn’t the walker’s fault. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

　By the way, do you like movie trivia? Here’s one for you. A rock star is killed in the movie. He’s a drug addict, a total crack head⁷. And this character is played by Jim Carrey. I didn’t recognize him. He doesn’t wear a mask or anything, but I just didn’t. If you care to watch it, see if you can.

　The wrong place at the wrong time もしかしたらこの表現、刑事物とか探偵物の小説や映画で聞いたことがあるかもしれませんね。「運悪く、あるところに居合わせる」という意味です 例えば、あなたの身に何か悪いことが起きたとします。あなたに責任はないし、何かしくじりをやらかしたわけでもない ただ間が悪い、運が悪いというだけです。つまり、まずいときに、まずい場所に居合わせた。あるいは、一段高くなった歩道を歩いていた人が、酒酔い運転の車にはねられたとします。歩行者に非はない。この人もやっぱり、まずいときに、まずい場所に居合わせて、巻き添えを食ったのです。
