ここ最近のビッグニュースといえば、マイケル・ジャクソンの急死
ひとつの時代が終わった、といっても過言ではないかもしれません。私もマイケルの音楽とともに育ったひとり。YouTubeなどで昔のPVなどを見ると、ほんとうにすばらしいパフォーマーだったなぁ、と再認識させられます
ネットでも多くの追悼メッセージが見受けられます。最後に多くの人が書いている「R.I.P.」とは、Requiescat in paceの略。ラテン語で May he(she) rest in peace!の意味です

　Michael Jackson died at age 50, Thursday, the 25th of June. The news came as a shock to the whole world, especially to those who grew up with Michael Jackson and his music, and certainly to me myself¹.

　Since his death, hardly a day has passed without seeing his photos and video footage² on TV. People around the world gather and mourn³ the death of the King of Pop and one of the greatest music icons of⁴ our time.

　For sure, his personal life was a mess⁵. It became tabloid headlines; marriages and divorces, obsession⁶ with plastic surgery⁷, court cases, money problems and more. But for now⁸, I want to allow myself to remember how wonderful he was, how fabulous⁹, how gorgeous¹⁰, how charming¹¹ he was. Just let us remember the contributions¹² and achievements¹³ he made. As many point out¹⁴, Michael Jackson was the first black artist to find stardom on MTV. And as MTV points out, he made music video an event for a global audience to long for¹⁵. And let us remember how great an artist he was, along with¹⁶ those timeless¹⁷ numbers including “Thriller”, “Beat It”, “Billie Jean” and “Black or White”.

　Michael, we thank you, we love you, we miss you, and may God bless your soul for all eternity.
