今日は、以前取り上げたフレーズ one of a kind について、もう少し詳しく解説しましょう

　For the past few weeks, when you tuned in on Channel 5 or Channel 10 if you’re watching analog, the chances were that you saw that blue little monster with big teeth and claws. He’s Stitch, a Disney character.

　I’m not a big fan of Stitch but obviously he’s enormously popular. So I said to myself “why not” and went to a nearby video shop. “Lilo and Stitch” and “Lilo and Stitch 2” were both out. The one I got was “Stitch! The Movie”.

　Stitch is an extra-terrestrial¹ now on earth and he’s not still fitting in². His best friend, Lilo, helps him and encourages him. She says he’s one of a kind³.

　I like this expression “one of a kind”. One of a kind means unique. We use this expression to describe something that is so special that there’s nothing else exactly like it. For Lilo, Stitch is unique, very special and precious. But come to think of it, Lilo herself has trouble fitting in with other girls of her age. I think it’s not because something is wrong with her but because she’s one of a kind. No wonder Lilo and Stitch have become good friends.

　It’s primarily for kids but if you like Stitch and learning English, get the movie. The wording and phrasing are relatively simple and completely free of⁴ four-letter words.

　私は特にスティッチのファンではありませんが、どうやらたいへんな人気者 らしい。そこで私もひとつ見てみようかという気になり、近くのビデオ屋さんに行ってみました。『リロ・アンド・スティッチ』と『リロ・アンド・スティッチ2』はどちらも貸し出し中 で、私が借りたのは『スティッチ!ザ・ムービー』でした。

　スティッチは宇宙から来た生き物で、今は地球で暮らしているのですが、新しい環境になかなかなじむことができません 一番の親友のリロはそんなスティッチを助け、励まし、「あなたは one of a kind なのよ」と言ってあげます。

　私はこの one of a kind という表現がとても好きです。「たったひとつしかない存在」という意味です 他に同じようなものが存在しないほど特別 なものを表すときにこの表現を用います
リロにとって、スティッチはユニークで、とってもスペシャルで大切な存在なのです。思えばリロ自身も同じ年頃の女の子たちとうまくやっていけない子どもです。でもそれは彼女に至らないところがあるからではなく、彼女自身もまた one of a kind だからなのです。リロとスティッチが親友になるのもうなずけますね

　この映画は基本的には子ども向けですが、スティッチが好きで、しかも英語の勉強中 という人なら見てみてください 使われている単語やフレーズは比較的簡単ですし、イケナイ言葉遣いはまったく出てきません

one of a kind の意味の説明で使われた unique、日本語で「ユニークな人」というと「おもしろい人」という意味で使われますが、英語の unique は「唯一無二な、類いまれな」という意味です。one and only も同じ意味を持つフレーズです
