先週、映画『パブリック・エネミーズ』主演のジョニー・デップがプロモーションのために来日しました。テレビ で彼の顔を見たリスナーさんも多いのでは 今日は引き続き、彼の映画から around を使ったフレーズをお届けします

　When I watched the movie of the third adventure of Jack Sparrow, I realized I hadn’t seen Sweeney Todd. In this movie Johnny Depp joined forces again with¹ his good friend Tim Burton. It’s a movie adaptation of the stage musical of the same name.

　Sweeney Todd is a sad, gruesome² story of vengeance³. You’ll see some brutal⁴ scenes and lots of blood. In fact the movie is rated R for graphic bloody violence, meaning you must have a parent with you if you’re under 17. I agree part of Burton’s visual execution is truly shocking and even unbearable⁵ but I find it poetic too. If you don’t mind a lot of blood, it’s definitely worth watching.

　Now time for learning a phrase. The movie uses a song called “Not While I’m Around” which starts with the line “Nothing’s gonna harm⁶ you, not while I’m around”.

　”While or when I’m around” means “when I’m with you” or “when I’m near you”. For example, let’s say, you’re a newly hired employee. You’re learning everything from scratch. Your trainer may say to you: You’d better be quick. I can help you when I’m around, but you’d have to take care of yourself when I’m not around. Another example. I’m going to visit you after work. I want you to be at home when I get there. So, I call you and say, “I’ll be with you at seven, so please make sure that you’re around”. In this instance, “around” means “home”.

　ジャック・スパロウ の冒険映画第3弾を見て、まだ『スウィーニー・トッド 』を見ていないことに思い当たりました。この作品で、ジョニー・デップはまたも親友のティム・バートンとタッグを組んでいます。同名ミュージカルの映画 バージョンです。

　『スウィーニー・トッド』は悲しく、陰惨な復讐譚⁷です。残忍なシーンもありますし、血もどばどば出ます 実際、血みどろの暴力描写につきR指定になっています。つまり、17歳以下の人は保護者同伴でないと見られない映画なのです 確かに、バートンの視覚描写は真実衝撃的 で、耐え難くさえあるのですが、同時に詩的な感じもしました。流血OKの方、見る価値は絶対にあると思います。

　さて、フレーズのお時間です。作中、”Not While I’m Around“という歌が使われています。”Nothing’s gonna harm you, not while I’m around”で始まる歌 です。

　”While or when I’m around”は「私があなたとともにあるかぎり」とか「あなたの近くにいるとき」という意味です 例えば、そうですね、あなたは新入社員で、何もかも一から学ばなければならない立場だとしましょう。あなたの指導に当たる人はこう言うかもしれません。「ちんたらするなよ。オレがいるときなら助けてやれるが、いないときは自分で何とかしなきゃならないんだぞ。」 あるいは、私は今日、仕事が引けたらあなたの家 を訪問するつもりでいます。私としては、到着したときに、あなたに家にいてほしい。そこで電話 でこう告げます。「7時 に行くから、その時間には必ず家 にいてね(please make sure that you’re around)」 この場合、around は home のことです
