　Have you seen the movie Terminator Salvation, which is also known as Terminator IV? It’s the first film in the series that doesn’t feature Schwarzenegger in the lead role, although he’s doing a cameo¹. The story is kind of predictable and it doesn’t deserve a two-thumbs up, but I managed to watch it through to the end.

　In the movie, the leading character, John Connor sends a radio message to resistance² fighters. There he says, “We are not machines, and if we behave³ like them, then what’s the point⁴ in winning?”

　This is the phrase we want to learn today: What’s the point?

　Let me give you an example to help you understand what it means and how to use it. Let’s say, you want to buy a very powerful, high-end personal computer. But what you’re going to use it for is to send and receive email messages, browse web sites, and create plain text documents from time to time. But if that is all, would you really need that powerful machine, which is supposed to be very expensive? Why? “What’s the point?”

　Now, regarding the preposition, instead of saying “the point in doing something”, you can say “the point of doing something”. I don’t know exactly what the difference is or if there is any difference. But as far as I know, “of” is more commonly used than “in”. So, when someone does something which is absolutely meaningless, you could ask: What’s the point? What’s the point of doing that?
