楽しいサイトをありがとうございます。ところで、先日旅行中に何度かシニア料金を設定している場所がありました。60歳からのところもあれば、65歳からもあり、「何歳からシニアですか？」と確認したかったのですが、英語ではなんといったらいいのでしょう？簡単な質問でごめんなさい。

　Our listener sent us a question. She wants to know how to ask for special prices for senior citizens¹ when available. So, let me talk about it today.

　As senior citizens now represent² the fastest-growing age group in many countries, public and private facilities or different merchants offer special rates and discounts for senior people; airlines, hotels, trains and buses, health clubs, swimming pools, even video shops and mobile carriers.

　If you’re a senior citizen, you may want to take advantage of³ these discounts. Especially when you’re already retired⁴ and no longer working, you certainly want to save money in every way possible.

　So, let’s learn a very useful word here, which is “eligible⁵“. When you’re eligible, you’re able to receive something or allowed to do something because you meet certain requirements⁶, such as age, income level or academic performance. For example, when your income is less than a certain level, you may be eligible for childcare benefits. Or, you may not be eligible for a scholarship program because of poor academic performance. Likewise, when you’re older than a certain age, you may be eligible for senior discounts.

　So, do you want to ask for senior discounts? Well, go to a service counter and say, “Excuse me, I’m 65. Am I eligible for senior discounts?” If the answer is yes, good for you. If not, that means you’re still young.

　こんなとき、知っておくと便利な単語がこれ、eligibleです。eligible というのは、年齢、収入、学業成績などである一定の基準を満たし、何かを受け取ることができる、あるいは何かをすることが許されるという意味です 例えば、あなたの収入が一定の金額に満たない場合、あなたは育児手当に対して eligible である、つまり育児手当の受給資格があると言います。また、学業成績が芳しくないため、奨学金制度に対して eligible でない、つまり奨学金制度の対象にならないこともあるでしょう 同様に、一定の年齢以上の人がシニア割引に対して eligible であるということは、シニア割引を受けられる ということです。

　さて、シニア割引を実際に利用してみましょうか。サービスの窓口でこう言いましょう。「ちょっとうかがいたいのですが、私、65歳です。Am I eligible for senior discounts?(シニア割引の対象になりますか?)」 答えがイエスなら、割引を受けられます ノーなら、それはあなたがまだまだ若いということです
