I tend to stay away from1 animal movies. I mean those movies which feature animals in the lead role. Dogs, cats, foxes, bears or sea otters, any animal. Why? If they die, I would cry. For example, “A Dog of Flanders”, can you watch it without shedding tears2? Even thinking about it, how it ends, would make my eyes wet.
Recently I broke that rule and watched “Hachi”. As you know, the movie is based on the true story of Hachiko. The Akita dog waited every day at the train station for its master, even years after he had passed away. The film is quite faithful3 to the original story, very simple to follow. So I guess you can enjoy it without constantly relying on subtitles.
In the movie, one phrase drew my attention, which is “off the hook4“. When the professor played by Richard Gere wants to finish work and go home, he asks his students, “Am I off the hook?” I think this means, “Would you let me get off work? Can I go home now?”
When you’re freed from danger, blame5, obligation6 or responsibility, you’re off the hook. Let’s say, when you get yourself free from a difficult situation, you’re no longer “on the hook”. You’re “off the hook”.

作品中、このフレーズに注目しました。off the hook です。リチャード・ギア演じる教授が仕事を終えて家に帰ろうとする際、学生たちに “Am I off the hook?” と訊ねます。おそらく、「仕事をあがっていいかな? 帰宅していいかな?」といったニュアンスだと思います。
危険、非難、義務、責任などから解放されるとき、あなたは「フックから外れた」状態ということができます。例えば、困難な状況から脱したとき、あなたはもう「フックに引っかかった」状態ではありません。「フックから外れた」状態、つまり危機から脱しているのです
