How did you spend your holidays? — 休日の過ごし方

いまいち盛り上がりに欠けるサッカーW杯 これからメディア でも取り上げられて、徐々に盛り上がってくる のかな～ と思っていたら、ベッカム選手がアキレス腱断裂、という残念なニュースが この間レッスンで紹介した単語が使われていました。¹

さて、今日は連休明けに使っていただきたいフレーズをご紹介します

　It’s Monday today but I guess most of you are off of work or school. It was the Spring Equinox² yesterday. At an equinox, day and night are about equal in length as the sun is positioned above the equator³. The national holiday⁴ fell on⁵ Sunday, therefore we have a substitute holiday⁶ today.

　In Japan there are 15 national holidays in a year and we have a three-day weekend almost every month. Naturally, after an extended time-off, you may want to talk with your friends about your or their holiday activities at work or school. And you can start the conversation with this question: “How did you spend your holidays?“

　Now, your friend may ask you this question. And this is a how question and you can’t answer it with a word or two. I could say, for example, “I visited my mother and went shopping together”. Or “I spent the weekend at the beach in Chiba”. Or “I took a two-day trip to Korea”. Even when you didn’t do anything special, you don’t want to just say “nothing special” as it would end the conversation. You could say, “Oh, I didn’t do anything special, but I cleaned out the kitchen, or I made pasta sauce in a big pan and put some in the freezer”. Well, after all, when you had three days off, you must have done something, if not special, mustn’t you?

　今日は月曜日ですが、ほとんどの人にとって仕事や学校はお休みでしょう 昨日は春分でした。太陽 が赤道の真上にあって、昼夜の長さがほぼ同じになる日ですね。国民の休日が日曜と重なり、今日は振替休日というわけです。

　日本の法定休日は15日ありますから、ほとんど毎月のように土日を含めた3連休があります いつもより長いお休みの後は、学校や職場の友人と休暇中の出来事についてあれこれお話することでしょう。そういうとき、会話の糸口となる質問がこれ、”How did you spend your holidays?(休日をどう過ごされましたか )” です。

　あなたがこの質問を受けることもあるでしょう。これはHOWを使った質問ですから、一言や二言で答えられる質問ではありません 答え方としては、例えば、「母と会っていっしょに買い物 をしました」とか、「千葉の海辺で週末を過ごしました」とか、「韓国へ2日の小旅行に出かけました」といった感じでしょうか。特別何もしなかった としても、「特になんにもしなかった」という答えはいただけません 会話 がそこで終わっちゃいます。「特別何をしたわけでもないんだけど、キッチンの大掃除をした、とかパスタソースを大鍋にいっぱい作って冷凍庫に放り込んだ」くらいは言いたいところです 何しろ3連休ですからね。まったく何にもしなかったということはないと思うんですよ。いかがでしょう。
