I talked about the movie “Knowing” a few weeks ago and I didn’t like it. This week I watched “2012” and I didn’t like it either. I know. I should have stayed away from another disaster1 movie. Oh, well, some people never learn. I’m not going to talk about the movie but I’ll discuss one phrase from the movie, which is “to pay in installments2“.
When you buy a high-ticket3 product such as home, automobile, maybe high-end computer, consumer electronics or furniture, you may not be able to pay in full4 right there and then5. Rather, you’re likely to pay over a period of time6, a relatively7 small amount at a time. In other words, you pay in installments. “Installment8” is one of a number of successive9 payments.
Let’s say, you buy a big-screen digital television and the payment is made monthly. You’re paying for the TV in monthly installments. If the payment continues for three months, it’s paid in three-month installments. It could be six-month or twelve-month installments. If you’re a home-buyer, you could arrange a 30-year installment plan.
Personally, I bought a new PC a few months ago and I’ve just paid the last installment. It’s now truly mine!

例えば、大画面のデジタルテレビを購入するとしましょう。支払は月賦 です。この場合は、you pay for the TV in monthly installments (テレビの代金を月賦で支払う)と言います 支払が3ヶ月にわたるなら、pay in three-month installmentsです。6ヶ月のこともあれば12ヶ月のこともある。家 を買う場合などは、30年の返済プランを組むこともあるでしょう
