underestimate — 過小評価

毎日暑い日が続いていますね 皆さん夏バテなどしていませんか 外にいるときは熱中症に気をつけていても、家にいるときは油断しがちですよね。実はクーラーの効いていないトイレやキッチンで倒れてしまうケースが多いそうです 皆さんも熱中症を甘く見ず、ちゃんと水分補給してこの夏を乗り切りましょう

英文スクリプト
　I’m sorry I took a break last week. But it’s not that I was having a vacation. My air conditioner broke and my productivity¹ dropped. It seemed to be a busy time for mechanics and I had to wait a whole week for a new one to be installed.

　When it broke, I was rather optimistic. I thought I could easily get by without² air conditioning for a week or so, I would just spend the week being a lot friendlier to the ecosystem.

　I was wrong. I could barely stay home. It was sweltering³ inside the apartment especially in the daytime. You just can’t underestimate⁴ the summer heat. It could kill you before it kills bears in the north pole. I learned it the hard way.

　Now, what you’re going to learn is this word “underestimate”. The verb “to estimate⁵” means “to make an approximate calculation”. Let’s say, you buy a built-to-order PC. You select a body, parts, maybe a monitor and calculate or “estimate” the approximate cost. When the estimated cost is lower than the actual payment, then you “underestimate” the cost.

　Actually, you can underestimate a lot of different things, such as cost, value, problem, risk, importance, impact, or even a person. So, make sure to look it up in a dictionary to better understand what it means and how to use it.

　壊れた当初はけっこう楽観的でした。エアコンなんてなくても、1週間やそこら、どうにでもなると思っていました。いつもよりめいっぱい環境に優しい生活をすればよいだけだとか。

　ところがどっこい。家 にいられない 特に日中は室内がうだるような暑さ になってしまう。夏の暑さを underestimate してはいけない、侮ってはいけないのです 北極のクマさんよりこっちの命が危ないです。つくづく身にしみました

　さて、今日はこの単語 underestimate を覚えましょう 動詞の estimate は「概算する」という意味です。例えば、自分で仕様を決めるBTOのパソコンを購入するとしましょう。ハコやパーツ、あるいはモニターを選び、おおよその費用を計算、つまり estimate します。で、この estimate した(概算した)コストが実際の支払額より低い なら、underestimateつまり低く見積もったことになります

　低く見積もる対象はさまざまです。コスト、価値、問題、リスク、重要性、影響、人間だってかまいません。意味と使い方をよく理解するために、必ず辞書 で確認してくださいね
