　Last week I talked about the idiom “up in the air” and it’s also the movie. I watched it this past weekend.

　The main character, Ryan Bingham is a corporate downsizing agent. He flies around the country, helping companies fire their workers. So, literally he spends a lot of time up in the air. In fact, he has a goal of earning 10 million frequent flier¹ miles. In the meantime, he doesn’t want marriage, doesn’t want a committed relationship², doesn’t want a home. He’s living an unsettled, uncertain, “up-in-the-air” type of life.

　Well, I don’t want to be a spoiler, so I’m not going to tell you what the story is about. Instead, Let me discuss the phrase from the film, which is “sounds³ great”.

　Let’s say, your friend at work says to you, “Hey, we’re going to go out for drinks after work tonight. Would you like to join?” You like the idea. It seems to be fun. So, you would say, “Oh, that sounds great!” Or, you and your sister want to buy a birthday gift for mom. Your sister says, “How about a pair of walking shoes?”. Your mother goes for a walk every day. Seems to be a good idea. So you would say, “Sounds great!”

　It’s a very simple but useful expression to remember. “Sounds” plus virtually any adjective: sounds fine, sounds wonderful, sounds horrible, sounds weird, sounds reasonable, sounds fun, sounds exciting. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?
