Today, I’m going to talk about the phrase “for sure1“. I’m sure you’re familiar with the word “sure”, so I’m going to skip the definition and discuss how to use it straight away2.
Let’s say, you ask me a question. “Hey, do you know if this topic will be discussed at the meeting today?” I think it will be but I’m not 100% sure. So, I would say, “I don’t know for sure, but I think it will be”. You ask me another question. “There’s a small grocery store3 around the corner. Do they accept4 credit cards?” Again, I’m not 100% sure. So I would say, “Well, I can’t say for sure, but I think they do”. One more example. When you guarantee you’ll be back by five o’clock, you’d say you’ll be back for sure by five.
Now a little background. I came across this phrase while I was watching a movie. It’s called “Resident Evil: Extinction” which is also known as5 “Biohazard III”. I guess you know the movie, hordes of6 man-eating zombies coming after human survivors. I found the film in the science fiction section but they should move it to the horror section. Simply put, it’s gross7.
