　Today I’m going to talk about a phrase which is again from the movie “The Women”. This sort of contemporary urban lifestyle movies, may be not your cup of tea, but tend to contain¹ a lot of idioms, colloquial² expressions and daily use phrases.

　For example, there’s a scene where Mary’s friend Sylvie talks to Mary’s daughter Molly who’s having a hard time adjusting herself to her parent separation. In the course of the conversation, Sylvie asks Molly, “You wouldn’t happen to³ have a cigarette, would you?”

　If you happen to do something, you do it by chance. Let’s say, you happened to see John in town. You didn’t plan to see him, you didn’t expect to see him there. You saw him in town by chance.

　Let’s say, I’m looking for my boss, Mr. Suzuki. Then you come along and I ask you. “Do you happen to know where Mr. Suzuki is?” When I ask this question, I don’t necessarily expect an affirmative⁴ answer. I’m just hoping that you might know where he is by chance.

　今回も映画 『明日の私に着がえたら』からフレーズを引用します。コンテンポラリーで都会的なライフスタイルを扱うこの手の作品（好みじゃないかもしれないけど）には、慣用句や口語表現、日常使いのフレーズなどが数多く出てきます

　例えば、メアリーの友人シルヴィと、メアリーの娘で両親の別居 に悩むモリーが会話 するシーン。会話の中でシルヴィがこう訊ねます。「You wouldn’t happen to have a cigarette, would you? (あなた、もしかして煙草持ってたりしない )」

　happen to do somethingというのは、「たまたま何かをする」という意味です。例えば、You happened to see John in town. この場合、あなたは会う約束があってジョンと会ったわけではありません。会うつもりがあって会ったのでもない。偶然、町でジョンに会ったのです。

　あるいは、私は上司のミスター鈴木を探しています。そこへあなたがやってくる。私は訊ねます。Do you happen to know where Mr. Suzuki is? この質問をするとき、私は必ずしもイエスという答えを期待していません。ただ、あなたがたまたま鈴木さんの行方を知っているといいんだけどな、と思っています。
