run と聞くと、ほとんどの人が「走る」と訳すでしょう でも、実際にはいろいろな意味を持つ単語なんです。今日はその中から1つをご紹介します。

　The video shop in my neighborhood was running a campaign¹ during New Year holidays. They let you have a DVD for 100yen for seven nights except new arrivals². I picked up half a dozen old titles and watched them over the winter break. I’m sure I’ll be talking about these movies sometime in the future but not now. Instead, I would like to look at this word “campaign” today.

　Now, there are different campaigns such as marketing campaigns, political campaigns or military campaigns. But when we use the word in Japanese, it is most likely to refer to a sales or advertising campaign like the aforementioned³ special discount offer given by the video shop.

　Now, I’m sure you know the word “campaign”. What I want to suggest today is this:

When you learn a word or noun like “campaign”, try to couple it with⁴ a key verb and make a phrase such as “run a campaign“. It means extra work but it does help to improve your English.

　新年のお休み中、近所のビデオ店でキャンペーンを実施していました。旧作DVDが1本100円で7泊借りられるというキャンペーンでした 半ダースほど借りてきて、冬休み中に見ました。そのうちお話する機会もありましょうが、今日は別の話題です。今日はこの単語 campaign に注目したいと思います

　キャンペーンにもいろいろあります。マーケティング関係のキャンペーン、政治向きのキャンペーン、軍事のキャンペーンなどなど。でも日本語でこの言葉を使う場合、たとえば前述したビデオ店の値引きなど、たいていは販売や広告のキャンペーンです。

　さて、campaign という単語は皆さんすでにご存知のことと思います。今日、皆さんに提案したいのは「単語、それも名詞(campaignなど)を覚えるときは、主要な動詞と組み合わせフレーズ( run a campaign など)として覚える」ということです もう一手間かけることになりますが、英語上達には必ず役に立ちます
