Toys don’t last forever. — いつかは壊れる

「すべての物事には終わりがある」という格言があります。どんなに辛くて大変なことにぶちあたっても、「終わり」があると思えるから歩いて行けるんじゃないでしょうか。今日で震災から1ヶ月。これからも粛々と関心を持ち続けたいと思います。

　I finally had a chance to watch Toy Story as its third installment¹ won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 83rd Academy Awards.

　I wanted to watch the first volume but it was out of stock² at the video shop around the corner. There was Toy Story 3 on the shelf but it’s still a new arrival and would cost extra, so I decided to go with³ the second volume.

　At the very beginning, Andy, a 6-year-old boy and the main character of the film, accidentally tears⁴ Woody’s arm. Woody is his favorite cowboy doll. Andy says to his mom, “Woody’s arm ripped⁵“. And Mom says, “I’m sorry, honey, but you know, toys don’t last⁶ forever“.

　”Last” in this sentence is a verb which means “to continue”. For example, you attended a teleconference which started at 10:00am and ended at 12:00. The teleconference lasted for 2 hours. John and Mary got married and one year later they got divorced. Their marriage lasted only one year. As you can see in this example, the preposition “for” is often omitted⁷.

　『トイ・ストーリー3』が第83回アカデミー賞で長編アニメ映画賞を受賞しました。これを機に今更ですがこの映画を見てみました
　1作目を見たかったのですが、近所のビデオ屋さんでは貸し出し中でした 3作目はあったけど、新作なのでレンタル料が余分にかかる。そういうわけで今回私が見たのは2作目です。

　物語の冒頭、主人公で6歳の男の子アンディがウッディの腕をうっかり破いてしまう ウッディはアンディお気に入りのカウボーイの人形です。アンディはお母さんにこう言います。「ウッディの腕が破れちゃったよ 」 お母さんは答えます。「残念だけど、toys don’t last forever.」

　この文章の last は「続く」という意味の動詞です 例えば、あなたは電話会議に出席しました。会議は午前10時に始まり、12時に終了しました。電話会議は lasted for 2 hours、つまり「2時間続いた」のですね ジョンとメアリーが結婚 して、1年後に離婚 した。彼らの結婚生活は lasted only one year、「1年だけ続いた(1年しか続かなかった)」わけです この例文に見る通り、前置詞 for はしばしば省略されます。
