We experience a cutoff1 of electrical power as a result of a shortage2, a mechanical failure3, or overuse4 by consumers. What do you call it in English? There are different words or phrases to refer to the situation, but I can offer one easy word to learn, which is a “blackout5“.
Tokyo Electric Power company decided to control power distribution6 by using blackouts after its nuclear power plants7 in Fukushima were severely damaged and no longer able to generate electricity due to8 the tsunami. In order to9 avoid massive10 blackouts, they decided to manage or plan blackouts. Therefore, this measure is called “managed blackouts” or “planned blackouts”. You can also call it “scheduled blackouts”.
Well, the government has now a different strategy to save power. But I’ll continue to do what I can do like turning off lights every time I leave a room, getting LED bulbs11 and pulling cords out of the wall.
I don’t have a phrase to practice with you but there are several words you may want to learn in this installment such as blackouts, saving power or energy or even LED bulbs. Pick up those words which are interesting to you and add them to your phrasebook.

東京電力はこの blackout という手法を用いて、電力の供給を制御することにしました。津波によって福島の原子力発電所 が重大な損傷 を受け、発電できなくなってしまったからです そこで大規模停電を回避するため、管理下に停電させる、計画的に停電させることにしました。この措置を managed blackout とか planned blackout と呼びます scheduled blackout ということもあります。
政府は節電に向けて新たな戦略を用いるようですが、私は私にできることを続けようと思います 使わない部屋の電気をこまめに消すとか、LED電球に変えるとか、家電のコンセントを抜くとか。
皆さんと練習するフレーズは用意していません。でも今回は blackout、save power、save energy、LED bulb など、覚えておきたい言葉をいくつか使っています。これはと思う言葉を拾い出し、皆さんのフレーズ帳 に登録 しておいてください。
