“It looks like rain.（雨になりそうです）”という使い方はもう皆さんご存じかと思います。でも、日常の会話では like を接続語のように使い、look like の後に文章が続くことがあるんです。使い回しがきくフレーズですので、ぜひマスターしましょう

　I’m going quote a line from Harry Potter again; this time from The Order of The Phoenix.

　In one scene, Harry’s mother says to Harry, “It looks like¹ you’re on your own²“. The idiom “on one’s own” means “alone”, “by oneself” or “without help”. So, when you’re on your own, whatever you do, you have to do it by yourself, without help.

　Now, let’s look at the whole sentence. You can see the phrase “it looks like” is followed by a sentence, in this case, “you’re on your own”. This is spoken English which is used when you say something appears to be true. For example, when you’re not likely to get your destination³ on time, you would say, “it looks like we’re running late⁴“. Let’s say, your friend is travelling in Europe and send you a good note, you would say, “Well, it looks like he’s having fun there”.
