A few days ago, I watched a news story on TV which was about English education in elementary schools1. As you’re aware, English has now become a compulsory2 subject at elementary schools in Japan. “Compulsory” means “required”. In other words, you must attend compulsory classes.
These new classes are aimed at3 fifth and sixth graders. The lessons are held once a week, or 35 times a year, with each lasting 45 minutes. As a result, children are supposed to learn 285 English words and 50 expressions. I have no idea whether this goal is ambitious4 or conservative5. Whichever the case may be, teachers seem to be struggling and puzzled. I don’t blame them. If you teach English or any language, you need to be trained to do so.
Anyhow, now that the new curriculum has started, I’m truly hoping their efforts will be successful and English proficiency6 in Japan will improve as expected.
For now, let’s learn this word “compulsory”. Again, “compulsory” means having no choice. If the course is compulsory, you must attend it. If the question is compulsory, you must answer it. Would you like to practice? Please repeat after me: Middle school education is compulsory in Japan.

この新しい授業は5年生と6年生向けです。週1コマですから年間では35コマ、1コマの時間は45分です。これで子どもたちは285の英単語と50の英語表現を学習するとのこと。ハードルの高い数字なのか、はたまた低い数字なのか、私には見当もつきません いずれにしても、先生方は苦労もし、困惑 もされているようです。無理のないことだと思います。英語を教えるには、というかどんな言語を教えるにも、そうするための訓練を受ける必要があります
とはいえ、新しいカリキュラムはすでにスタートしていますから、皆さんの努力が実を結び、日本人の英語力が期待通りに向上することを願ってやみません。
