President Obama addressed1 the nation earlier this month when the U.S. credit rating2 was downgraded3 from triple-A to double-A plus by Standard & Poor’s. In his address, the President says, “No matter what some agency may say, we have always been and always will be a triple-A country“.
Let’s look at this sentence: We have always been a triple-A country. As you can see, the sentence uses the present perfect4 tense5.
A few weeks ago, you learned how to talk about an experience by using present perfect, such as ‘I have been to France’ or ‘I have read the book’.
Here’s another use of the tense.
50 years ago, the U.S. was a triple-A country. Today, it still is a triple-A country. To indicate the ‘continuity6‘ of actions or states, you can use the present perfect tense. Let’s say, you met John 3 years ago. Today you still know him. Therefore, you say ‘you have known John for 3 years’.
