It’ll do. — 事足りる

満足してるわけじゃないけど事足りたからOK、というシチュエーション。日本語なら「ま、これでいいか。」といったところでしょうか これにあたる英語は何でしょう

英文スクリプト
　I was watching an entertainment show on TV and the movie “The Tourist” was featured. I kind of liked the trailer and I’m a big fan of Johnny Depp. So, I rented the DVD and watched it. How do I like it? Uh…. It was rather disappointing¹. Too predictable². It’s supposed to be a mystery but in 10 minutes from the start it stops being mysterious.

　Anyhow, I’ll give you a phrase to learn now.

　In one scene, Johnny says to Angelina, “You don’t like it?” And Angelina answers, “Well, it’ll do“.

　When something is sufficient³ or there is enough, you’ll say, ‘it will do’. I’ll quote an example from a dictionary, which says, ‘there isn’t much food, but it’ll do for the two of us’. You don’t have a plenty of food but you do enough for two people.

　Let’s say, you have a run in your stockings⁴ and you quick fix it with nail polish. You look at it and say, “Well, it won’t last long but it’ll do for now”.

　テレビ の娯楽番組を見ていたところ、映画『ツーリスト』を特集していました。予告編を見る限りおもしろそうだったし、ジョニー・デップの大ファン でもあることだし、DVDを借りてきて見ました。で うーん ちょっとがっかりかな 結末が丸見えな感じでした。ミステリーのはずなのに、10分も見てると少しもミステリアスではなくなってしまう

　あるシーンで、ジョニーがアンジェリーナにこう言います。「これ、気に入らない 」 アンジェリーナはこう答えます。”Well, it’ll do.”

　何かが十分であるとき、あるいは十分にあるとき、it will doという表現を用います。例えば、辞書にはこんな例文が出ていました。There isn’t much food, but it’ll do for the two of us. 食べるものが大量にあるわけではないが、2人で食べる分には十分だということです

　あるいは、ストッキングが伝線してしまい 、ネールポリッシュで応急処置をしたとしましょう。あなたはそれを見てこう言います。”Well, it won’t last long but it’ll do for now.” 「長くは保たないけど、今はこれでよし」ということです。
