今日取り上げる単語は accept です。以前のレッスンで receive との意味の違いをご紹介しました。覚えているでしょうか

　I was watching a movie on DVD and in one scene a young boy gives a sugar cube to a small girl as a gift, and he hopes she will accept¹ it. The English title of this movie is “The Secret World of Arrietty” but that’s beside the point here. Let’s look at the word ‘accept’ for now.

　To accept means to receive something offered, especially with gladness or approval. You accept a gift. You accept a glass of water. Or you can accept something intangible². For example, you accept gratitude³, apology, or condolences⁴.

　Then what does it mean to accept with approval? What’s the difference between ‘to receive’ and ‘to accept’? Let’s say you receive an offer. At this point no decision has been made on your part. You examine carefully what the offer is all about. Then you decide it’s a good offer. Therefore, you accept it. In other words, you say ‘yes’ to the offer.

　映画 のあるシーンで、少年が小さな女の子に角砂糖を贈り、「受け取ってくれると嬉しい 」と言っていました。『借りぐらしのアリエッティ』という映画ですが、映画の内容とは別に、今日は「受け取る」という意味の accept に注目したいと思います

　accept は差し出されたものを receive つまり受け取る意味で、特に感謝や承認の気持ちを伴うときに使われます 贈り物や一杯の水をありがたく頂戴するときなどに accept を使うのです。無形のものにも使えます。例えば、感謝の気持ちを快く受け取る、謝罪を受け入れる、お悔やみの言葉を受けるとき、いずれも acceptを用いて表現できます

　では、承認の意を伴って受け取るとはどういうことでしょう。 receive と accept の違いはどこにあるのでしょう。例えば、ある提案を受けたとしましょう。この時点では receive しただけ、つまりあなたは何の決定も下していません。この提案の中身についてじっくり検討し、これは良い提案だと判断したとする。そこであなたはこの提案を受け入れることにした。この最後の段階が accept であり、提案に対してイエスと答えることを意味します
