Multiplication and division — 掛け算と割り算

前回、over を使った割り算の表現を紹介しました。でも、学校では devide と習ったような・・・というリスナーさんもいらっしゃるでしょう。私もそうでした もちろん devide を使っても表現できます

　Let’s continue to discuss mathematics.

　Last week, we learned the expression ‘two times two makes four’. This is ‘multiplication’. In other words, you multiply¹ two by two² to get four. Likewise, you multiply three by seven to get twenty-one. Or three multiplied by seven is twenty-one.

　We also learned the expression ‘six over three makes two’. This is ‘division’. You divide³ six by three⁴ to get two. Likewise, you divide twenty-seven by three to get nine. Or twenty-seven divided by three is nine.

　数学の話を続けましょう

　先週は times を用いて 2 x 2 = 4 と表現しました。これは掛け算です。これを multiply という動詞を用いて「2掛ける2は4」と表現することもできます 3と7を掛けて21とするなら、multiply 3 by 7 to get 21です。3 multiplied by 7 is 21も同じです

　over を用いて 6÷3=2 とする表現も学びました。これは割り算です。divide という動詞を用いて「6を3で割ると2」と表現することもできます。27を3で割って9とするなら、divide 27 by 3 to get 9です。27 divided by 3 is 9も同じです
