　This is the last week of August. How did you spend your summer vacation? Did you do anything special? I spent mine rather quietly, visiting my mother, reading books, watching movies, and stuffing¹ my fridge².

　Well, today, rather than learning a new expression, let’s review how to use the word ‘spend’. The basic sentence structure is ‘you spend time doing something‘. For example, you spent the whole day relaxing on the beach. You spent many hours sitting in front of television during the London Olympics.

　Now, you can tell me how you spent your summer vacation but for now let’s use this sentence for practice.

　8月も最終週になりました 夏休みはどうお過ごしでしたか 何か特別なことはしましたか 私の夏休みは静かなものでした。母を訪ねたり、本 を読んだり、映画 を観たり、冷蔵庫に食べ物を詰め込んだり。

　今日は新しい表現を覚えるのではなく、spend の使い方を復習しましょう 基本的なセンテンスの作り方は「主語 + spend + doing something 」です。例えば、you spent the whole day relaxing on the beach なら、「日がな一日、海辺で寝そべっていた」ですし、You spent many hours sitting in front of television during the London Olympics は「ロンドン五輪の期間中は、何時間もテレビの前で(座って)過ごした」です。

　皆さんにも夏休みの過ごし方について説明してもらってもよいのですが、ここでは練習用のセンテンスとしてこちらを使いましょう。
