　Let me quote lines from a television ad today.

　”Excuse me, some roses please.” “I’m afraid we’ve sold out. They must be having a big party.” (cut a few lines and) “Please, you must know how important roses are for (a) woman to say yes.” “You are proposing?”

　When I first saw this ad, I immediately picked two sentences for discussion. One is ‘they must be having a big party’. The other is ‘you are proposing’.

　In these two sentences, the present continuous is used to express future arrangements. For example, I’m leaving right now. He is coming soon. We’re having guests for dinner tonight.

　「すみません、薔薇の花をください。」「悪いけど、売り切れなの。あの人たち、きっと大きなパーティを開くのね。」(途中いくつかすっ飛ばして)「そこを何とか。女性にイエスと言わせるんですよ。やっぱり薔薇はマストでしょ。」「君、誰かに結婚を申し込むのかい?」

　最初にこのCMを見たとき、これはトピックに使えるなと思ったセンテンスがふたつありました。ひとつは they must be having a big party、もうひとつは you are proposing です

　これらふたつのセンテンスでは、この先の予定を表現するのに現在進行形が使われています。例えば、I’m leaving right now(今すぐにおいとまします)、He is coming soon(彼はすぐに来ます)、We’re having guests for dinner tonight(今晩は夕食にお客様がいらっしゃいます)なども同様です
