May I use the bathroom? — おトイレ借りるね

トイレ。これが通じないと旅行ではとっても不便ですよね 今日は旅行などでもよく使うフレーズをおさらいしましょう。bathroomのthの音も一緒に復習してくださいね。（busとbath）

　I spent the weekend watching half a dozen movies, one of which was about a Roman bath architect¹ traveling back and forth² between ancient Rome³ and modern-day⁴ Japan.

　I didn’t pick up any words or phrases directly from the movie because the story was told primarily in Japanese. But then I thought of the expression ‘to use the bathroom⁵‘.

　When you’re in the situation where you would use the word ‘toilet’, use instead the word ‘bathroom⁶‘ especially when you’re in the US. And be careful. A bathroom is not something that you ‘borrow’ from a friend. You can say, ‘I need to go to the bathroom’ or ‘May I use the bathroom?’.

　この週末はDVDを見て過ごしました。数にして5、6本見たんですが、その中にはローマの公衆浴場の設計士さんのお話がありました。古代ローマと現代の日本をタイムトラベルで行ったり来たりするんです。

　基本的に日本語の映画でしたから、単語やフレーズを直接引用することはできませんが、お風呂つながりでこんな表現を思いつきました。use the bathroomです。

　「トイレ」という言葉を使う状況に立ち至ったとき、「トイレ」の代わりにbathroomという単語を使いましょう。特に米国ではそのほうがよい。それと、bathroomはお友だちから「借りる」ものではありません。borrowではなく、go to the bathroomとかuse the bathroomと言います。気をつけてね。
