「何とかしたい」とき「あの手この手を使ってどうにかする」と言いますよね。英語でも似たような表現があります one way or another です。

　Today I’m going to quote a sentence from the Woody Allen movie “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger”.

　Let’s forget the story and Let me give you the line. You’re here to learn some words and phrases in English after all¹. So, one of the main characters says: One way or the other², I want to move on with our lives.

　‘One way or the other‘ or ‘one way or another‘ means ‘somehow’ or ‘in any way that is possible’. It’s used for saying someone will do something but you don’t know exactly how. For example, one way or another you’ll get the job done³. You’re sure you’ll get the job done but you don’t know how it’s done.

　今日はウッディ・アレンの映画『恋のロンドン狂想曲』からセリフをひとつ引用したいと思います

　ストーリーについてはこの際忘れることにして、早速本題に入りましょう 何だかんだ言っても皆さん、ここに英語の言葉やフレーズを学びに来ているんですものね では。主要な登場人物のひとりがこう言います。One way or the other, I want to move on with our lives.

　one way or the other 、one way or another でもいいんですが、「何とかして」とか「使える手ならどんな手を使っても」という意味です。誰かが何かをやることは確かだが、その方法は定かでない、というときに用いる表現です 例えば、One way or another, you’ll get the job done なら、「何とかやり遂げる」、「必ずやり遂げるがその方法ははっきりしない」ということですね。
