　During the new year holidays, I watched half a dozen DVDs including “Celeste and Jesse Forever”.

　Celeste and Jesse dated in high school, got married¹ and now getting divorced². They try to maintain their friendship while they both pursue³ other people.

　In the movie there is a line which goes: You deserve to be happy. Let’s focus on the verb ‘deserve‘.

　If you deserve something, it is right you get it because of the way you have behaved or qualities⁴ you have. And ‘deserve’ can be followed by the infinitive.

　For example, you worked very hard over the last six months. Therefore, you deserve a vacation. Or, you deserve to be well paid.

　年末年始、DVDを5、6本観ました。そのうちの1本が『セレステ∞ジェシー』です。

　学生時代に恋 に落ち、そのまま結婚したセレステとジェシーですが、現在は離婚 調停中 互いに新しい恋を探す一方で、いつまでも親友どうしでいたいと願っています。

　映画の中にこんな台詞が出てきます。「You deserve to be happy.」 今日はこの動詞 deserve に注目しましょう

　ある行為や資質を根拠に、あなたが何かを得るべくして得るとき、英語ではこれを you deserve something (～に値する、相応しい)と表現します。 deserve to do something のように不定詞を伴うこともあります。

　例えば、この半年、あなたは猛烈 に仕事をしてきました。あなたのこの行いにより、you deserve a vacation と言えば、「休暇をもらうに値する(休暇を取っても誰も文句は言わない)」という意味になります 一方、you deserve to be well paid なら、「十分な報酬をもらってしかるべきだ」という意味です
